Wednesday drew many strangers to Sidney as all real estate firms sent investigators. One man had fifteen, another fourteen, with others bringing one or two loads. Agents moved large numbers of prospects, turning the county into a busy scene of property scouting and population boost. Real estate here is seen as as good as gold or US bonds, matching an enlistment spirit.
City Council met in regular session at the council chamber in the courthouse. Mayor McIntosh and six members present. Bills allowed and licenses removed from teamsters and draymen. Willis and Elisser proposed completing city hall excavation. tabled until next meeting. Adjourned to Friday evening August 18. Margery Fuller left for Fresno after a pleasant summer in Sidney.
Mesdames Owens Martin Davison and Perry returned from Kimball where delegates to the W C T U convention met for Triue County and Banner Cheyenne counties. Mrs L Martin of Sidney was elected president for the next year with Mrs Owens of Sidney as vice president of Cheyenne county. Senator Bushee welcomed attendees and Mrs Shepherd of Utah addressed the gathering as a principal speaker.
Mrs Edward MacLernon arrives from Portland Oregon and stays with her sister Mrs W J Shoemaker. She receives many calls from friends and is described as a welcome guest in the city, noting her family's past impact before moving away six years ago.
A general Friday rain visited the county with some wind and hail in a few spots. The soaking shower promises a month of growth for corn and potatoes and other crops not yet ripening, with cooler temperatures following the rain and shorter daily heat periods.
A five woman motor party leaves Boulder Colorado as a central point to explore the mountains. Mrs Essig Miss Esther Devine and two more plan a week long trip with Grace McFadden to join later. Their journey highlights a congenial mountain excursion from Denver.
Contractor C. P. Grant will construct on his western lot beside the new Ford garage to handle his growing contracts. He also bought the adjoining residence lot last week and will soon build a home for his family.
Mayor McIntosh began a summer auto trip with family and nephew Clifton McIntosh traveling from Denver to the Garden of the Gods via Cheyenne in search of places not visited last year. The journey marks a regular annual tour with a changed route toward higher country.
The Methodst Sunday school enjoyed its annual picnic on Wednesday with all attendees driven to Olson's grove two miles west of town. Shade water lunch and cheerful spirits made the event more successful than before, marking a pleasant summer day.
The Southern Amusement Company runs a week of nightly attractions in a prime site one block east of Rose street. A top Ferris wheel and a first class merry go round anchor a string of eleven acts, band music, and lighting that makes guests feel safe and entertained. The show features a tiny couple with live baby doll, the world’s biggest woman, a human aeroplane, and a spider-bodied beauty, drawing large crowds. The Cheyenne County Fair Association benefits from commissions.
State Bank Examiner E Ed Emmett checked the American Bank on Wednesday finding it in shipshape condition. Samuel Peterson inspected the Sidney State Bank and Gurley bank and found both in correct and accurate books. National Bank Examiner W G Fair also checked the First National Bank noting affairs in usual good shape.
On Monday two colored men were fined one dollar and costs for drunkenness and not allowed to eat. On Wednesday the county judge handled a plain drunk fined twenty dollars and costs, plus a man named Mike Smith charged with choking Lafayette Hurley. Smith claimed to have left a package on the platform. witnesses testified he choked the boy when asked. Smith received twenty five dollars and sixty days in jail.
Ezra Meeker, famed frontiersman and promoter of national highways, visited Sidney Tuesday. He traveled with the prairie schooner mounted on a Pathfinder flat car, promoting new roads as he journeys from Washington to Seattle with a six month schooling background and renowned writings.
North Platte defeated Sidney 4 to 2 on the local diamond in a steady well played game. Reeves pitched for Sidney and Walworth for North Platte, with six and five hits allowed respectively. Visitors scored twice in the first inning, North Platte tallied two in the first, one in the fourth, and one in the eighth. The game featured few sensational plays and was largely error free aside from a couple wild pitches. Our boys called it the best game of the season, defeat viewed as inconsequential.
Mr Birdwell and wife arrived from their north divide ranch on Tuesday. They recently finished their fall wheat, yielding a strong crop from a seventeen acre piece at better than 31 bushels per acre.
Mr and Mrs Kedick returned Tuesday to stay with Mrs Kedick's sister Mrs J A Bentley in Des Moines. They had interrupted a prior visit to join a fishing excursion into Wyoming with their nephew Chariton Bentley driving them in his car.
Mrs Hazel King Pearson returned Thursday evening to her home in Kansas City after weeks here with relatives and friends. Luncheons at the Pacific House featured her visit with Miss Florence Parks as hostess and Mrs Charles Mann presiding. Mrs Pearson is a favorite and receives much attention during her stay.
Wedding notices report John Henry Castleberry and Istel la May Price of Haxtum Colorado wed August 7 with Judge Chambers officiating Oliver Lee Nelson and Elsie Elizabeth Nelson from Sidney also married August 7 by County Judge Chambers in Sidney.
Ralph M Osborn and Anna I Kilburn of Denver were married in this city August 6 by Tudge Chaim bers. They obtained their license the day prior and chose Sunday in Sid ney for the ceremony to assure a happy married life.
Lloyd Dunlap of Sedgewick and Susis Lucile Hoover of Bridgeport were married in the city on August 9 at Judge Chambers home. Judge Chambers witnessed the vows with his daughters Anna and Viola as witnesses.
Len en De Jacna railroaded the kiss in Denver as Wid Lenen and Margaret N De Jacna married on Thursday August 10 1916 by the county judge in his pleasant office.
Mrs Harriet Shoe maker Gast died Sunday morning August 6 at her daughter Mabel Gast Nelsen’s home in San Francisco. Born December 28 1834 she lived in Cleveland Ohio and Ogalalla Nebraska before Sidney. Survived by two sons three daughters eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Funeral held Wednesday August 9 with burial at Oakland across the bay.
Mrs. Edwin C. Hardy, a former Omaha resident, died in Chicago last Friday at age 76. Survived by husband Major BE C. Hardy, formerly The Bee staffer, and five sons and two daughters who once lived in Omaha. Burial held in Chicago Sunday afternoon. A Hardy of Notel National is a son. Major Hardy, a known newspaper writer on current topics, visited his son locally.
Telegram reports the death of A C Johnston on July 27 at his home in Eagle Harbor across from Seattle Washington. His wife was Julia McFadden a Sidney graduate and former game school teacher. They have a three year old son named Cameroun.
Cc W Smith and his wife from Sunol visited Sidney last Friday, a brief local social note noting their trip and arrival in the city.
