The heavy steady rains Saturday night Sunday and Monday afternoon saved lives and crops. Weatherman Bermuda High discussed earlier, but the downpour cooled heat and ended drying fears. Gardeners and lawn sprinklers caused scalds yet the wet spell eased outdoor anxieties for the season.
Coroner J J Parks held an inquest at Sunol on July 28 into the deaths of Ira Paup and Paul Vacik after they were shot. Witnesses included C W Smith and John Demers who pursued the robbers, and constable John Tracy summoned jurors L B Allington L R Barlow O I Fenske George M Booth Friend Dickenson E W Smith. The coroner's jury found Paup and Vacik died from a bullet to the breast fired intentionally by Frank Connell in the bank robbery.
Conductor Jack Sager J P Aldridge and brakeman M D Cos Tell o have resumed work on the fourth districts. New hires John Belknap Frank Jarret and W E Rowe join the car department amid rising business. Yard Engineer C I Couch travels to Atlanta due to a relative illness. A freight derailment at Durham Wyoming delays passenger trains 18 and 20 about ninety minutes. Karl Trognitz promoted to yard fireman. Glenn Moore and Guy Dedrick reassigned. Train master J W Adams office moves from North Platte to Sidney with permanent location. James Goddard of Omaha superintendent’s office moves to Sidney as stenographer. family to relocate to Sidney.
The Dalton Delegate passes this week from Editor Tom W. Lally and Bertha A. Lally due to Mr Lallys ill health. The Telegraph mourns their departure as Dr Weir, former Tribune Sentinel editor, assumes ownership and editorship while receiving a strong goodwill legacy.
On Friday a green wagon pulled by four goats rolled through town as a one man sideshow. The driver, a young man who lost both legs near the waist, earned a living selling postcard pictures and stories of his outfit. He claimed the goats could travel twenty five miles daily on good roads.
A. S. Hardy and family and Doctor Bliss and wife left Tuesday in the Hardy car for an outing in Estes Park and other Colorado pleasure resorts. This is an annual trip with both families and they have a full idea of all the joys to be had in such a trip.
R. E. Paulson and family arrived early in the week and took possession of the cottage vacated by Professor Braham and family. Paulson, from Bridgeport, becomes new manager of the Nebraska Telephone Company, succeeding C. E. Dewey who has resigned.
A noon July 28 holdup at Sunol bank led to a fatal chase in which cashier Smith, Paul Vacik, and Ira Paup were killed. Denver businessmen Connell and Lukens were captured after a two hour pursuit across fields and fences. Local deputies and Lodge Pole residents aided, police filed charges Monday in the district court for murder and accessory before the fact.
The Southern Amusement Co plans a weeklong Sidney engagement starting Sunday afternoon, presenting a large carnival with acts like The Old Plantation minstrel show, Gowdy's congress of wonders, Jolly Josie the 615 poundest woman, Bluey Bluey the monkey man, and a 10 in 1 side show. Featured are Mars trip, Spidora the spider lady, Major Littlefinger family, Buster doll baby, and an art exhibit with September Morn. Monstrous alligator farm and clean concessions accompany the fair under Cheyenne County Fair association.
Cards announce the marriage of Theodore Wood of Omaha and Naomi Cover of Cozad Nebraska on July 25 1916 at the brides parents home Mr and Mrs J H Cover The couple will live in Omaha Mrs Wood is a University of Nebraska graduate and Wood is a Sidney native who later joined the Nebraska Telephone Company engineering division in Omaha The Telegraph extends congratulations.
Fred L Windsheimer of Weyerts and Freda A L Ronneker of Lodge Pole were granted two marriage licenses on July 31. No returns have yet been made on the matter.
Jay Queen of Lodgepole and Velma Cunningham of Lisco appeared before County Judge Chambers on Monday July 31 and secured documents and a ceremony that united them for life. M. V. Queen and wife Blanche Queen served as attendants.
Alva Misner of Lodgepole and Hulda W Ottlo of Bradshaw Nebraska wed here on July 31 as recorded by the County Judge.
The state banking board appeals to the Supreme Court from District Judge Cornish of Lancaster County in the Sidney bank case. The judge held the board lacks power to refuse a charter if incorporation requirements are met, claiming such power would effectively create a monopoly.
L Jessen and his wife are anticipated to return home today or tomorrow from Denver and suburb, with a brief note that they spent a refreshing period away.
City Council held a Friday session and adjourned to Saturday with Charles C. Stenicka present to aid adopting a new municipal book keeping system and to assist with estimates and levies. Water rates fixed. carnival proposed but not on main streets. use of taxpayer lots offered. meters to be installed. next meeting set for August 4th.
Mrs. Clifford Tuttle shot her ex husband Clifford Tuttle on Monday evening July 31 in Scottsbluff. She invited him to walk, then fired twice after leaving Main Street. A crowd gathered as bystanders found her with his head in her lap and the revolver in hand. She said she had shot him and had just cause.
On the Sidney diamond at the fair ground last Sunday a rain dampened attendance but the game proceeded, ending 18 to 6 in favor of Sidney. No spectacular plays noted as local farmers express interest in leasing Cheyenne County farms. OSBORN AND JORGEN-
