Tragic Horse Accident Claims Lodgepole Teen

In Lodgepole 17 year old Katie Ewing daughter of Mr and Mrs John Fwinz was killed when a horse belonging to R E Pettis ran away and crashed into a fence near the post office. The girl died instantly most likely from a broken neck. Funeral services were held on Wednesday with a large crowd in attendance.

Union Pacific to shift Sidney shop work as North Platte cuts staff

The Union Pacific plans to move two lathes a planer and a drill press from North Platte to Grand Island and Sidney. Machinist force at North Platte will drop from about forty to ten to fourteen as round house repairs remain. Additional machinery may move, and overall staffing will shrink by 50 to 75 percent before Omaha shops open.

Union Pacific suspends Nebraska ballast work and discharges crew

The Union Pacific halted all grade and ballast work in Nebraska and discharged the crew, reportedly due to exhaustion of gravel at Sherman pit. Work west to the Wyoming line is finished. The North Platte Tribune says a pension system may soon start for employees aged 55 with ten or more years of service, based on 25 percent of current wages.

Death of Joseph Kelly Gover nor remembered in Sidney

Joseph Kelly known as Governor died at his daughter Mrs J J McIntosh home in Sidney on Sunday August 3 after a long illness and decline. Born March 1 1820 in Ireland he emigrated to America at 19 then moved to Nebraska in 1865 and helped build early Cheyenne county. Funeral held Tuesday at 3 pm at the McIntosh home with Rev Pather Flood officiating and Catholic cemetery burial.
