Summer fallow boosts crops for dryland wheat farmers
In western Nebraska, dry land farmers increasingly employ summer fallow to improve yields. Reports from Cheyenne and Sterling area growers note many fields yielding 40 to 50 bushels per acre, with some as high as 60. One farmer cites 70 bushels on a 29 acre plot after early harvesting by combine. Farmers value moisture retention and early planting, with many planning wheat next week after current harvests.
