One Cent Gas Tax Boosts Panhandle Counties Revenue

Nebraska Panhandle counties would gain about 100000 annually from a seven cent gas tax slated to take effect Sept 20. Cheyenne County would receive 13576 extra, while the six cent tax yields 153642. added one cent lifts totals over 167000.

One Well May Link Gaylord Juelfs Fields In Cheyenne County

British American Oil Co reports a possible connection between the Gaylord and Juelfs fields in Cheyenne County. Bangers No. 1 shows commercial potential in the middle of the two fields while Wills No. 1 yields strong oil with a pending completion. Numerous other wells across Banner Kimball Sioux and Scotts Bluff counties are listed as wildcats or producers, with several nearing production and others awaiting tests.

Ohio Halts Drilling In Sidney District

Ohio Oil Co. moves its rig to Wyoming and stops further drilling in the Sidney District for now. The lone rig west of Sidney just completed a dry hole in the Range Field and was active in Chambers and Grabill areas for weeks. Future 1957 drilling depends on additional funding.

Obituary for Sidney grocer Jesse C. Preble dies at 70

Jesse Clifton Preble 70, a prominent Sidney groceryman, died Saturday at Cheyenne County Memorial Hospital after a Mayo Clinic surgery. Funeral services are Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at First Methodist Church with burial in Greenwood Cemetery. Survivors include wife Violet son Ferris two grandchildren and two sisters. Memorials may go to First Methodist Church. Born 1887 in St. Edwards Nebraska he moved to Sidney in 1916 and opened a grocery in 1936 remaining active until retirement.

4-H Calf Inspection Tours Delayed by Harvest

Cheyenne County will hold tours to inspect 4-H beef calf projects on Thursday and Friday with a possible follow up next Monday. County Agent Ivan Liljegren said the late harvest canceled the initial session and the Livestock Committee seeks to assess project results.

Mrs Spearow Dies At 87 Rites Tuesday

Mrs Mary Spearow 87 died in her sleep Saturday at her Omar Court home. Funeral services Tuesday at 2 p.m. from First Methodist Church with Rev R L Townsend officiating. Burial Greenwood Cemetery Craig Mortuary in charge. She was born Oct 8 1869 in Lancaster PA daughter of Harry H and Kathrine Herr Hess. Chain reaction six car crash injures Sidney boy

A six car chain reaction crash at Highway 19 and 30 east of Sidney left 8 year old Terry Smith with two missing teeth and minor injuries. Total property damage was about 1245 dollars according to the Nebraska Safety Patrol. The sequence started when a 1953 model driven by E F Acer of Chappell slowed at the intersection. A 1957 model driven by Florence K Smith of Sidney followed by a 1956 model driven by Dorine Sonnenburg of Spring Valley California and other vehicles collided in succession. A 1953 car driven by Olive Hunt of Otumwa Iowa struck the rear of Gale's car as it was involved.

Potter Resident Anna Christensen Dies at 78

Anna Katrina Sorensen Christensen, 78, a Potter resident for 56 years, died Sunday at Cheyenne County Memorial Hospital after several months of ill health. Funeral services are Wednesday at 2 p.m. at First Lutheran Church Peel with Rev. A J Wacker. burial in Potter Cemetery. Gehrig and Son Funeral Home in charge. She was born December 31, 1878 in Hobro Denmark and came to Sidney in 1901. She married Chris Christensen in 1902 in Sidney. he died earlier this year. Survivors include a daughter Cody Patterson of Potter, four sons in Sidney Kelso and Fort Harrison, nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, plus a sister and brother in Denmark.

Humidity Slows Wheat Harvest Across County

Wheat harvest in Cheyenne County neared completion as humid weather slowed cutting Sunday. Officials estimate over four million bushels cut by tonight, about two thirds of the crop, with Gurley Dalton Potter and Sidney reporting progress and two thirds finished in many areas.
