Rep. Virginia Smith introduces legislation to curb abuse and tighten eligibility for the Federal food stamp program. She cites rising costs, 6.8 billion this year, and notes one in ten Americans receive stamps. The bill would limit high incomes, strengthen work rules, improve coupon handling, add an elderly deduction, close loopholes, and boost benefits for those truly in need by 29 percent.
The National Weather Service foresees no break in the heat wave with Tuesday afternoon highs in the 90s after morning 60s. A livestock safety index is in danger for southeast Nebraska as extreme northwest rangelands face very high fire danger Tuesday. Cheyenne County schedules a public hearing at 10 am Tuesday in the Commissioner's room to review a proposed fiscal 1976 budget of 1,784,074. The plan includes a property tax request exceeding 800,000 and would raise the mill levy by about 0.5 mill to roughly 12.65 mills, a 14 percent increase over fiscal 1975's 1.3 million budget.
The High Plains Agricultural Lab near Sidney recorded July rainfall of 1 inch less than July 1974, totaling 1.63 inches for the month. The peak daily rainfall was 0.83 inches on July 10, with highs of 92 degrees on July 27 28 and 30 and a low of 43 degrees on July 11.
