Cheyenne County voters face an August 14 primary as ballots are printed for about 4500 ballots amid heavy campaigning. Candidates flood the county with last minute literature and postage costs rise. Robert Wood 65 a longtime Peetz resident and former farmer died Thursday morning at a local hospital after a heart ailment brought earlier in the week He moved to Peetz from Stella Nebraska and is survived by his wife and one son Wilbert of Peetz The body is at Gehrig funeral home awaiting further word on funeral arrangements
Rain again interrupted the softball schedule as Potter-Cressey and Dalton St Patrick games were not played Tuesday evening. Monday Liberty Bell defeated Lodge Pole Firemen 5 to 2 and Gurley led Class B by facing the Lions Club.
Banner cites Douglas Perkins and Saunders officially in emergency drouth area on Tuesday making them eligible to purchase distressed cattle. State director Prof H J Gramlich notified. Seventy seven counties in the state now in emergency area with new purchasing points opening daily.
State Treasurer Hall reported July gas tax payments to 11 Panhandle counties totaled 260 477 45 with Cheyenne 2347 79 Banner 397 84 Box Butte 2251 32 Dawes 1939 30 Devel 1135 Garden 94803 Kimball 1124 33 Morrill 1680 51 Scottsbluff 6387 40 Sioux 934 26 for the period.
Nebraska farmers face a severe roughage shortage as fall and winter feed stocks dwindle. Officials urge saving damaged corn, straw, sorghums and other crops to feed livestock and prevent losses. The corn hog committee reported reaching its hog quota and will mail contracts for signature. Figures differ from government totals, but a compromise may follow. About 600 early pay contracts mailed to Washington last Friday should be paid in about a month. The corn hog office remains in the old post office building and will move soon to the new post office.

Earthquake insurance nearly unheard of in Nebraska but a Chadron policy stands as an exception. R S Oberfelder, after the Long Beach quake, had J W Johnson write a policy on his building, the only such known in the state. The near Chadron quake underscored potential usefulness if it had extended further south.
A heavy shower totaling 0.26 inch fell in Sidney Tuesday night, described as very local by air field records. The storm moved from the west with a brief cloud burst around 6 p.m., with Pine Bluffs and Kimball reporting lighter rain, and showers nearby but less intense. Big Springs logged showers near 9 p.m. as overcast skies and electrical activity persisted. Sidney noted 66 degrees while North Platte reached 88.
The wheat belt league has two games on card this week with Sidney and Lorenzo postponing until the Seals return from the Post tournament. Chappell travels to Peetz while Potter visits Bunker Hill in the other matchup. Potter seeks a strong result against reputedly strong Bunker Hill.

A United Airlines four place cabin plane crossed Nebraska from Sidney to Chicago in under 20 hours, illustrating the speed of early air travel. An east bound plane passed Sidney at six, and an aircraft reported its position over the local field at 8:30. The grounded plane had been en route from Chicago to Denver and stayed overnight to avoid a storm.
The Sidney Loan and Building Association marks its 35th year by declaring a two percent dividend for the past six months and a four percent annual dividend, keeping a flawless semi annual record. Leon Fine is re elected president and Henry Doran continues as vice president. Ernest Worden as treasurer and Leslie Neubauer as secretary, all long serving.
The drought pushes farm officials to mull relaxing production restrictions next year on wheat corn hogs and possibly cotton. Aimed at easing controls if drought ends soon the plan would not alter overall control. farmers could plant full acreage in 1935 with contracts pledging future reductions if needed. Officials seek smaller cuts than this year while retain a uniform contract system and improvements to the program. They worry about public reaction to continued curtailment despite drought relief hopes.
Sidney Is To Meet Tucson in Ariz as Sidney’s Post tournament ball club leaves for Denver Tuesday afternoon prepared to tangle with the Tucson PFE club. Manager Robineau plans to start Vern Thomas and may use three of five pitchers headed by Rohr Wehde and Free man. Hafey has signed for the tournament, with Gabby Street granting a ten day release.
Northwestern Nebraska residents awakened by two quakes at 12 14 a m on Monday reported about ten seconds of shaking half a minute apart. Strongest at Chadron with reports from Gordon Rushville Hay Springs Crawford and Alliance. Damages minor chimney breaks with no known injuries. tremors also felt as far east as Cody Harrison Rapid City.
A district court room in Sidney hosts a Saturday meeting on August 4 at 1 30 p m for residents interested in eradicating bindweed and small flowered morning glory along with prairie dogs from Cheyenne county. Officials propose legal steps to remove the two pests, noting prairie dogs are dwindling yet spreading to new towns. Continuous control efforts and multiple trials are urged, as the weed persists and may take years to conquer.
Nebraska relief officials report 2245 families in 11 western counties rely on federal and county funds. An August allocation of 20 570.88 dollars is the government share. Cheyenne county shows 215 families but only 152.40 in August funds. State charity wards total 28014, with seven counties receiving 387 547 for August relief and drought aid handled separately by federal director Rowland Haynes.
Potter highlights C W Johnson Republican lieutenant governor candidate and H J Challburg Democratic railway commissioner aspirant. Johnson is a former state senator and cattle raiser near Potter backed by leading Republicans and seen as a top contender. Joseph K. Green a former Sidney resident died at Ger ing Tuesday evening aged 75 He lived in Gering 13 years after leaving Sidney Born in England he came to America at nine and settled near Mason City Nebraska City Later moving to Sidney in 1908 Surviving are wife three sons Frank Joe Albert and three daughters Katherine Lee Ely Henderson and John Owen Also two brothers two sisters and 16 grandchildren Funeral services will be held at Sidney Greenwood cemetery this afternoon at 2 30 with Rev F Char ling Mills of the Methodist church officiating Rice funeral service in charge Many Sidney residents who knew him were shocked by the news.

Florence Thurston daughter of Mrs Arthur Borcher of Gurley wed Wesley Berry son of Mr and Mrs Guy E Berry. The couple slipped away to the Sioux county seat two months ago and were married there. Both are known in Sidney with ties to the wheat allotment office and Piggly Wiggly market.
Mrs. Ethel M Burke and C C Davis married at Mr Davis home in Sidney last Saturday evening conducted by Rev F Charling Mills of the Methodist church. Miss Marjorie Burke and Mrs Vern Livingston attended. About twenty relatives and close friends were present. Both are well known here with Mr Davis having resided locally for years and Mrs Davis moving to Sidney from a Gurley area farm.
At a library board meeting the annual report was read and approved. Patronage in the last two months remained strong despite heat, with a plan to improve ventilation next summer. Reading charges for seven day books drop from ten to five cents, while renewal cards for non students rise to ten cents. No adult section volume may be drawn by students until high school and only with librarian approval.
Secretary Walker of the state barber board says there is no barber code in Nebraska. He notes 85 percent of shop owners in a district could form a code and seek Washington approval, but none has done so. Most shops already operate under voluntary agreements on prices hours and wages.
Emanuel Mueller of Frohna Missouri died in Sidney on Wednesday evening while visiting his sons in the north Potter district. He had been ill four days. Funeral services were held at Rice funeral home with Rev. H F Krohn officiating. The body was shipped to Frohna for burial.
State and county officers have not signaled progress in the $2,000 Hyannis jewelry theft. Four Sidney arrests remain in jail with no formal charges filed. Two of the detainees have been returned to Hyannis.
