The city awaits state regulatory updates before opening the Sidney station for annual vehicle inspections. No test machinery changes are planned, but many rules will be relaxed to ease pass rates. Inspector Harvey Vizina is ready once the state approves the setup and manual.
The Scottsbluff chamber of commerce invites R. H. Dollinger, secretary, to address the group at the Union Pacific hotel during the regular lunch Monday. Chairman W. P. Ackerman has not yet received a reply but expects acceptance since Dollinger previously agreed to speak in Sidney. Dollinger has led the Scottsbluff chamber to notable civic success.
The Sidney Rifle club won first place in a three position team match at Bridgeport in the second annual tri state shoot. Six teams from Nebraska Colorado and Wyoming competed with Fullerton second and Bridgeport third. D Mathews of Sidney claimed top honors in the individual three position event, with C Palmer of Bridgeport second and Louis Mattea of Fullerton third. Mattea also won the prone match while E L Trum of Sterling Colo. was second and W S Arwine of Fullerton third. In the standing match Joe Baldridge of Fullerton finished first, Mathews second and Alvie Neuman of Douglas Wyoming third.
Lisco lay in a washed out zone Tuesday night as rain swelled water over Highway 26. Motorists from east and west were turned back while Dr Doran of Chappell described a wall of water nearly as high as his car sweeping the road. Scottsbluff reporters could not approach to verify damage.
Mrs Albert Marlatt of Medway Ohio faces a pig surplus after Bessie a Duroc Jersey sow bears 25 offspring with twenty surviving. Pro ration has been needed to feed all mouths as the family jokes about pigs defying laws of control and hogs cannot be trusted.
The Sidney chamber of commerce will sponsor a special cachet designed by high school students for air mail letters on one day during Air Mail week May 15 to 21. The cachet shows a tractor and combine in a wheat field symbolizing Sidney’s growth from frontier fort to wheat center. An airplane will collect the letters from Sidney on the designated day. The exact date will be announced soon and the chamber aims to maximize Sidney publicity. The chamber pays 9.50 for the cachet. Numerous high school students nationwide enter essay and poster contests tied to National Air Mail Week. LeRoy Larson notes community interest in young aviation enthusiasts.
United Cannery Workers union accepted Secretary Wallace's 1938 beet wage decision in a Denver meeting on April 23. Organizer J. Austin Beasley said the plan not to strike aims to gain cooperation from sugar factories and employment agencies and to keep local labor to handle the crop.
Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Flood, a pioneer Dalton resident, were held Wednesday after she died last Saturday in Alliance. Known as an early arrival after the Burlington railroad reached Dalton, she was also familiar to Sidney residents. Her husband served as a Catholic priest in Sidney for many years before his death.
Harry E. Russell of Hastings was nominated for district governorship of Rotary International at the 120th district conference in North Platte. The nomination must be confirmed at the Rotary International convention in San Francisco next June.
The six district convention of Nebraska Federated Women's clubs crowned Mrs. J. H. Cantlin of Alliance as president with Ella Hadedorn of Hastings as vice president and Jennie Overstreet of Scottsbluff as treasurer. A seven member committee will map a district split for next year. Prizes were awarded for best historical scrap book and an editorial entry in a New York sponsored contest. Speakers included Mrs. H. L. Bunt of Wyoming. Next year’s meeting site remains undecided.
State Senator A. L. Miller of Kimball, visiting the capitol, said winter wheat prospects in the panhandle are the brightest in years with three to four feet of soil moisture. He noted panhandle counties except Kimball expect bumper crops though Kimball farmers have abandoned farms due to drought.
Checks totaling 2190.43 have been received in Cheyenne County for participators in the 1937 range program. The county had 22 ranchers with at least 640 acres eligible. Federal benefits since April 1 exceed 325000, with most payments to farmers and landowners and little remaining unclaimed. Committeemen estimate 1937 soil payments will total 375000 to 400000.
The 1938 Trail yearbook for Sidney high school was delivered to student subscribers. It features improvements in artwork, two color printing, and plastic binding. Anne G. Taylor served as editor in chief with Marilee Ellsworth as business manager.
A tornado 11 miles northwest of Oshkosh struck Tuesday afternoon, killing two 8 year old pupils Mary Zorn and Ellen Brown and injuring several others including teacher Beulah Blausey. Jean Zorn, 10, died later in an Oshkosh hospital. Buildings at the John Zorn district school and a farm structure were demolished as hail and darkness followed the storm.
A severe dust storm struck Sidney and vicinity Monday night. Residents believed recent moisture had left a crust on top soil, causing dust from unknown distance to settle over Lodge Pole valley. Farmers fear spring crop damage though winter wheat might escape unless wind continues long enough to deplete moisture.
General farm conditions in western Nebraska show improvement yet observers warn full recovery is years away. A revived moisture cycle helps, but seven years of drought and wind erosion left topsoil and pastures scarred. Native buffalo grass faces doubt over a complete comeback amid fears overgrazing as livestock herds rebuild.
Three moving picture company representatives faced a wall of flood water after their car stalled seven miles east of Broadwater on a dry sand road. Ill-timed river surge swept the vehicle away to a railroad trestle, leaving Mrs Jonas and her husband J Jerome Jonas of New York City and A R Mitchell of Denver stranded for hours. They waded to higher ground carrying Mrs Jonas as the rain pounded down and the car lurched, finally rescued by a passing motorist.
Cecile Murphy, Cheyenne County spelling champion, will compete in the Nebraska state spelling championship in Omaha. After winning county oral and written titles, Cecile departs with her teacher Mrs. Worden to challenge the best spellers from the state, with hopes of adding a state title to her list of achievements. In another note, County Judge Robert A. Barlow experiments with probation for intoxication cases to avoid hardship on families while enforcing lawful penalties.
Grade school athletes from town and rural Cheyenne County schools will compete in the annual senior high track and field meet. Classes A and B divide events to give fair chances, with boys and girls in separate events: sprints, jumps, throws, relays and the shuttle relay.
May Day will be observed as Child Health Day across Nebraska with communities planning observances in May or on other dates. For ten years Compress has designated May Day for this purpose and state and national leaders issue proclamations to highlight yearround child health efforts in home school and community.
John Barnard three year old son of Mr and Mrs Warren Barnard Bridgeport wandered all night in a blinding dust storm near Pump kin Creek twelve miles northwest of Bridgeport. He was found by a five man search party at daylight crawling on his hands and knees near his home with eyes crusted shut. He remained grimy and exhausted but in good physical condition per Dr A G Burnham.
A weekend storm drenched the county with rain and hail causing property damage. Officials logged 2.22 inches in 24 hours while hail damaged neon signs at Sidney businesses, greenhouse glass, car tops, roofs, and basements. Bridges and roads suffered washouts but main highways remained passable with local disruption.
The department of roads and irrigation lists May driver license exams across counties. In Sidney Cheyenne County exams occur Wednesday May 4 and 18. Nearby counties Banner May 5 19 mornings, Kimball May 5 19 afternoons, Deuel May 17, Morrill Saturdays, caarden May 11 afternoon. Exams in adjacent counties on same days. Patrolmen Examiners visit county seats in morning and afternoon.
Commencement for the 1938 senior class will be held May 10th in the senior high school auditorium with baccalaureate the prior Sunday evening May 8th. Gordon Daniels is valedictorian and Beth Travis salutatorian. Graduation announcements are being delivered. programs and graduate list to be announced next week.
