A flood plain management engineer from the Nebraska Natural Resources Commission will visit Sidney on Monday to brief city and county officials and citizens on flood hazard area construction rules. Mathews of the NRA will speak at 2:30 p.m. in the north basement of the Cheyenne County Courthouse about actions to meet building requirements. Sidney has been accepted into the federally subsidized flood insurance program, with Cheyenne County waiting to apply after its development plan and zoning ordinances are approved. The July 1 deadline applies, and nonparticipation could cut off federal funds.
Dr H C Q Nelson of Sidney was elected vice president of the Nebraska Dental Association and chosen as a delegate to the American Dental Association convention in Chicago. The selection pushes him toward president elect next year and then president in 1977, a first for a Western Nebraska dentist since 1954. Nelson’s background spans Cheyenne County roots, Sidney High School 1939, CCC, Chadron State College, World War II service, and a 1952 DDS from the University of Nebraska. He has held multiple community and education roles in Sidney and Western Nebraska.
The Cheyenne County Historical Association elected nine directors to stagger terms of one, two, and three years to achieve one-man, one-vote representation across three county districts. Officers will be chosen from among the directors at the next regular meeting on May 5, with readings on local history and entertainment by the Ft. Sidney Colonels and Bob Cape presenting on the Mud Springs Indian Attack of 1865.
Nebraska Supreme Court Justice Lawrence M. Clinton, formerly of Sidney, visited Sidney Junior High to brief eighth grade civics classes on how the court operates. He noted the recent judiciary unit completion and his own Sidney roots and early schooling at St. Patrick's.
USDA census shows wheat in all positions at 638.3 million bushels on April 1, up 17 percent from a year earlier but second smallest since 1952. Farm stocks stood at 250 million, about 40 percent of the total, with prices falling from above $5 to about $3.60 by mid April. Corn, soybeans, barley, oats and sorghum also show declines or mixed signals as weather and demand shift.
Forecasters expect a pleasant weekend across Nebraska with warmer temperatures and partly cloudy skies. A slight chance of scattered thunderstorms remains in central and western parts while overnight lows dip from the upper 40s west to the lower 50s east.
Lincoln AP Senate vote approves amendment to LB381 creating a temporary extension of the 55 mph speed limit. The measure sets the limit to remain in effect until 90 days after the 1976 legislative session adjourns, rather than making it permanent. The current law would otherwise expire June 30 unless extended.
A full-scale outdoor disaster drill is set for Saturday afternoon in Sidney. About 25 Sidney High School students will act as injured persons on the football practice field to test emergency and law enforcement response times and hospital coordination.
Nearly 200 secretaries and students attended Western Nebraska Technical College's third annual Secretarial Seminar. Dr. William Pedraza of Alliance Public Schools spoke, with a panel of area secretaries including Jeri Anthony Mavis Bauman Jean Holly and Janis Ribera. Films on secretarial work were shown by the Post Office and Northwestern Bell. Students from WNTC Sidney Gurley Gordon Crawford and Ogallala programs joined, Tanya Emerson of Sidney won a one year free tuition prize with Karen Mather as alternate. The event was hosted by the secretarial procedures class directed by Marlis Shearer.
