Four Sidney Students to Compete in State Commercial Meet
Four Sidney high school pupils will compete in the state commercial contest at Kearney tomorrow, head of the school’s commercial department, Walter Kinne, said. Former Sidney resident hurt in Cripple Creek mine disaster
Three men died and two were injured Wednesday when a mine cage fell to the bottom of the shaft at the American Eagle Mine near Cripple Creek Colorado. The deceased were Joseph Hedman A Marshall and Newton Taylor all about 50 and from Cripple Creek Victor. Francis Fisher a former Sidney resident now of Victor Colorado was among the injured with a fractured leg and minor injuries. His wife who was visiting Sidney verified the report. Also injured were Slim Harwell 30 with bruises and others. The cage was being raised when the accident occurred.

The couple planned a secret ceremony but news leaked. Atkins is a Sidney Broadwater high school graduate and former state normal school attendee who taught locally and works at Farmers Produce. the couple now reside in Sidney.

Postmaster McCaulley said all bids for housing the Chappell postoffice were rejected this week and the office will stay in a vacant bank building after the old postoffice burned earlier. New bids will be invited. The Chappell post office was burned out last October in a fire that also destroyed a lumber yard and hardware company building.

ICM Rejects Grain Rate Cuts For Omaha Panhandle Produce
The interstate commerce commission refused to reduce grain rates from western Nebraska panhandle to Omaha. Current rates cost wheat farmers 1 to 5 cents per bushel, equating to $100 to $600 yearly, and in some cases rates were raised. The Omaha grain exchange traffic department and the Nebraska railway commission have fought the existing rate structure for a year. railroads stayed neutral. Panhandle rates from Julesburg to Cheyenne are 26 cents, Oshkosh 21 cents, with Oshkosh 368 miles from Omaha. The exchange calls panhandle rates outrageously high versus pre original order levels and plans to lobby the Nebraska railway commission for prompt action.

O L Webb secretary of the Nebraska High School Activities Association says the 13th annual state music contest at Kearney May 1–2 will be among the largest. About 4 700 pupils from 164 high schools entered. 782 entries in 59 events, up from 666 entries in 55 events last year. Major entries include piano 47 and small group vocal choir 51. Sidney will be well represented after strong showings at Mitchell district meet.

With warmer weather at hand the city urges residents to use the free service for killing ants and preventing their spread. The city funds a worker to combat ants and rats and results are satisfactory, prompting continued public cooperation. Call the city clerk to obtain results. O L Webb secretary of the Nebraska High School Activities association disclosed Mitchell led Nebraska district basketball tournaments in gross receipts totaling 6724.05 dollars. Omaha was second with 558.50 and Norfolk third with 515.50. Webb said about 4000 pupils from 150 high schools have entered the annual interscholastic music contest at Kearney May 1 and 2, with an expected 5000 entries. He noted 225 pupils from 46 schools have entered the annual state commercial contest at Kearney next Friday.

A University of Nebraska museum party under Dr. E. H. Barbour recovered a mastodon skull and lower jaw along with fossil bones of a prehistoric horse, camel, pig, and other extinct animals near Bridgeport. Lincoln men B Schultz and Thompson Stout joined S R Sweet T C Middleswart and W F Chaloupka in five days of excavations, noting the jaw lay about 1000 feet from the skull, likely moved by ancient flood waters.

Couple Slightly Hurt In Accident Sunday
Mr and Mrs Morris DeRock of New Plymouth Idaho escaped injury when their automobile was struck by another machine in Sidney Sunday evening. They were en route from Sterling to Scottsbluff where they are visiting. The other driver backed into the DeRock car and fled the scene. The DeRock vehicle was badly damaged.

Morgan Wins Bid to Audit Sidney City Books
Earl J. Morgan of Scottsbluff was awarded the contract Tuesday night to audit the city books for the fiscal year. His bid of 95 dollars was five dollars less than the next closest bid and 30 dollars less than the highest. Morgan did the work for the city last year and the finance committee expressed satisfaction with his work.
