The Tri County Association for Retarded Children will discuss establishing residency here for out of town children at its general meeting tonight. The public session begins at 8 p.m. in the Environmental Cottage and many trainees from surrounding counties may stay in Sidney due to transport issues. Citizens fostering these youngsters are involved and views are welcome.
Back at Dix W. CD Brawner veteran superintendent announces return to the school system next fall for his 21st consecutive year and his 18th year as superintendent.
Funeral services for Dorothy M. Northup 67 will be held Thursday at 1 30 p m at Craig Holechek Funeral Home. Rev Darrell Davis of Light Memorial Presbyterian Church will officiate. Burial is in Greenwood Cemetery. She was born Dorothy Marie Monk November 12 1902 in Phillipsburg Kansas and married George Northup March 2 1921 in Denver Colorado. The family lived in Sidney since the 1940s. Survivors include sons George A. in Springfield Virginia Robert W in Upper Montclair New Jersey James R in Annandale Virginia and Harry in Santa Monica California a daughter Mrs James Gay of Atwater Ohio one sister Mrs Martha Kirtley of Denver one brother Leland P Monk of Richland Washington and ten grandchildren.
Cabelas Bay Property For Parking Lot Cabela's, Inc. buys land south of its 13th and Hinots St building and will take possession June 1. The purchase from Harry Sparks includes two residences and a shop building now used by Harold's Electric. The corner residence and shop will be removed for a surfaced lot while the west side residence remains. The parking space is needed for the busy mail order and retail departments serving a nationwide sporting goods market. Richard and James Cabela own and operate the business, which moved from Chappell to Sidney after purchasing the former John Deere Co. building.
The Nebraska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission will relocate to Sidney on June 1 to a ground floor space in The Marathon Oil Co. building. Director Paul Roberts notes fire proofing and a six-person staff as factors in the move from 101512 Clinots St. The ground floor site offers improved access and security.
Memorial Hospital installs new x ray equipment at nearly forty thousand dollars. Old x ray gear kept for standby use. Board asks building committee to seek architect ideas to remodel Memorial Rest Home lobby for better heating cooling and a homey feel. Sprinkler system for basement referred to committee. Hospital census trails year prior due to mild winter.
NWweather Panhandle forecast shows snow ending this afternoon with decreasing cloudiness. Partly cloudy tonight and Thursday with westerly winds 10 to 20 mph. Highs 35 to 45 this afternoon, 45 to 55 Thursday, lows 20 to 30. 30 percent precip this afternoon, near zero tonight and Thursday. Extended outlook through Sunday calls for partly cloudy and cooler to warm with near zero precipitation and a chance of snow Saturday. Highs in 40s Saturday, mostly in 50s otherwise.
P W Pete Barker 91 former Sidney businessman died Monday night at Good Samaritan Home in Millard. Funeral services 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Light Memorial Presbyterian Church with burial at Greenwood Cemetery. Gehrig and Son Funeral Home. memorials to church. Born March 27 1879 in Victor Iowa. Survived by three sons George G Ross R and Ronald D and four grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Bernies Packing Plant operated by Bernie Gass since 1959 has been sold to Ed Haupt and George Nolde. Change of operation likely on the first of the month with Nolde in active charge. License to process meat applied for and should be approved soon. Plant will process meat for area customers and sell halves and quarters of government inspected meats. Gass cites health issues and plans for the future are indefinite.
Western Nebraska reports a surge of moisture with rain sleet hail and snow across the region. Wheat and oats planting slowed by wet fields while temperatures lingered below normal in parts with blizzard conditions causing reduced visibility and accidents.
The 1971 national wheat allotment is 43.5 million acres with a marketing quota of 1 210 million bushels, down from 45.5 million acres in 1970. Quotas require producer referendum by August 1, 1970 and aim to cut carryover by about 500 million bushels amid world overproduction.
Tuesday night’s blizzard dumped up to a foot of snow in the northern Panhandle, closing many roads as travel depended on falling wind and clearing skies. Plane schedules suffered in western Nebraska and meetings were canceled due to severe travel conditions.
The Potter airport will shut down starting Sunday for an oil drill on site. Operator Patrick A. Doheny plans the Potter Townsite No 3 well in northwest section 6 14 52, with the rig set up Sunday and the airport closed until at least May 15. The prior two Doheny wells at Potter were dry. The airport lies at the town’s western edge with no nearby oil production.
The Ft Sidney Motor Hotel reports $25 000 in improvements through April as boards consider ongoing upgrades. Dennis Wamsley says many rooms are redone or refurnished with color TV now standard and occupancy has averaged over 50 percent since January. He notes more work will come but slower due to summer, with expected capacity occupancy June 15 to September and better food receipts than last year.
