The annual golf banquet tournament will begin Sunday after delays caused by poor weather. A. S. Hardy and Fred Haworth lead the two golf armies as the event starts with players expected to report to golf headquarters at the Western Drug Store to learn their pairings.
The grounds committee led by Doc Thayer is smoothing a ditch on No 12 to ease play from ditch to green and trimming the north bank. A water well is being drilled north of No 17 tee to serve players and No 6 fairway, with a shelter house to follow. John Treinen operates the well drilling. Golfers, including Jay Closman who shot 69, are warming up for midsummer conditions.
Sidney delegation attends Scottsbluff installation as 36 candidates, including James F. Howard of Sidney, are initiated. Rev Anton Kink and W P Miles among Sidney attendees with Miles delivering a principal speech. Razpah Douglass travels to Bridgeport then Scottsbluff for home beautification program duties.
Four Chevrolets were stolen from four localities Tuesday night in this section. Ted Davis of Dalton reported his car missing. Cheyenne Julesburg and Ogallala were the other theft sites. Authorities suspect an organized gang and say the thieves made a clean getaway.
William James Barrett aged 49 and one day died in a Denver hospital on Saturday April 7 1928 after two paralytic strokes. A Lodge Pole native he served as assistant postmaster and bank clerk before moving to Denver to work for the railway. Services were held at the family home by Father Hollie with a later graveside service in Sidney. He leaves three sisters and two brothers among grieving relatives and many floral offerings.
An all-day event by Sidney Motor Sales for Baldwin-Gleaner and Ford displays drew farmers from the region. The program included film showings, live talks by Baldwin company representatives, a free lunch run by Presbyterian ladies, and several sales orders recorded, with Mr. Bouch, Mr. Barrmore, Oscar Barnett, and Fred Mauser among speakers.
The Angelus a three act comedy will be staged by St. Patrick's academy juniors next Sunday at 8 00 p m The first act opens at the Beveridge home where Sheila Beveridge spurns Jeff Norton for Ralph Harding a New York real estate man The second act moves to Father O'Brien's church and home where Jeff's sorrows lead toward ruin until an appeal by the Angelus and Father O'Brien save him The final act shows Ralph Harding failing before Father O'Brien as Jeff and Sheila unite in Father O'Brien's study
Funeral services for Mrs Mahola Jane Taylor were held at the Methodist church with Rev L H Kaub in charge. Interment followed at the old family home in Grant, the body transported by automobile and Rev Raub assisting there. The Howard funeral home directed arrangements. The local P E O chapter met at Mrs C W Theal's home.
County fair runs September 11 to 14 this year. Plan exhibits now by preparing seed beds, selecting top seeds or plants, and giving plots careful care. Confer with department superintendent and county agent for planning tips on garden, livestock, fruit, grain and other exhibits.
Frank Edward Beaves born August 30 1865 in Ferris Illinois died April 13 1928 in Dalton Nebraska at 62. He moved from Oklahoma to join a sister in the Bratz home before his death after a life marked by hardship. He leaves his wife Emma Barnes four children in Oklahoma and siblings Anna Bratz Fred Bratz Otto. Burial was in Dalton cemetery.
Walther league of St Pauls Evangelical Lutheran church staged Step On It Stan at Tobin Opera House. The three act comedy features Stan Gray as the towns hapless lead and a cast including Henry Krumm, Sibley Shepard, Ray Cryder, Charlie Norris, Sid Pressly, Peggy Brooks, Hazel Wilton, Prudence Quimby, and Sarah Boggs. Harlovies orchestra provided intermission music.
Gene Tunney wins his bid to face Thomas Heeney for the heavyweight title in July, cutting Jack Dempsey out of further consideration. Tunney claims he favored two fights this year, with Dempsey in June or July and the winner of the elimination bout in the fall. Dempsey’s reluctance to June dates led to the Heeney arrangement, a move Tunney says he will not change.
After a church board meeting Rev L H Kaub tendered his resignation and will be relieved of his pastorate in early August He plans to spend a year in Edinburgh Scotland pursuing a masters degree at the university and has booked passage with his wife and Frances on the Cedric sailing August 26 from Boston He will also travel in Palestine and the Orient in 1939 Meanwhile Patrick and Ruff proprietors of the Peoples Meat market closed their shop here and moved to Big Springs to open a market
The Sidney Parent-Teachers Association held its monthly meeting at the high school. An evening program featured Virginia and Helen Johnson in song with an encore, Rev. W T Kahse led the devotional, and Prof J W Nielsen conducted the accounts as officers were chosen for the coming year: Mrs J W Goodale president, O J Weymouth vice president, Mrs R C Fricke secretary, and Prof J W Nielsen treasurer. Mrs G W Frankeberger led the social hour.
Sidney won the district debating contest at Bayard by defeating Bayard two to one in the finals last Wednesday night and will enter the state contest at Lincoln May 10 and 11. Sidney debaters were Gwendolyn Jorgenson Lomila McCleneghan and Paul Kahl with Loretta Osborn as alternate. The judges included H R Partridge, Earl Mallory, G O Kelly, Miss Lewis, J F Nelson, B B Harrison, and C N Anderson.
The Bremen crew Capt. James Fitzmaurice Irishman and his companions Baron von Huenefeld and Capt. Koehl survived a 36 hour Atlantic flight in a Junkers monoplane landing on Greenly island off Labrador. Damaged propeller fuel shortage and rough terrain halted the Westward crossing with repairs planned for New York once reassembled.
Dr W H Wiker O D has relocated his optical practice to a larger space above the Sidney Sweet shop with expanded facilities and new equipment for an up to date optical parlor. W H Tiger of Gurley was in Sidney Tuesday.
Five women’s clubs gathered at the Christian church for an achievement day program, after plans shifted from the Methodist church. Miss Rizpah Douglass led a leaders’ session on district mothers camps, June 17 to 20, and future county fair exhibits were discussed. Mrs. J. D. Bolton was elected county chairman for next year, succeeding Mrs. Emil Bluhm, with Time Savers in Clothing Construction as the new project.
About a hundred attended the tenth annual De Molay banquet at the Christian church last Monday evening. Hollis Kepler served as toastmaster with Martin Dimery G F Liebendorfer and Herman Schroeder delivering speeches and Schroeder presenting Edgar Guest poem Your Name. Two songs by Misses Virginia and Helen Jane Johnson followed, with piano accompaniment by Miss Helen Doran, and a free picture show at the U S A theatre concluded the program.
Rev and Mrs Bicknell and Mr and Mrs E V Hiett and Mr and Mrs R M Adams attended the united revival at the Christian church in Gering on Wednesday afternoon. Evangelist Lowe and the Andersons conduct the services with plans to possibly relocate to the Sidney Christian church for part of next winter.
