Weather has been near ideal since the previous issue and farmers report renewed examination of fields. A week brought substantial improvement with many growers hopeful for an average fall wheat harvest. some say the prospect has seldom been better. Re-seeding may occur where needed after the prior unfavorable report.
G E Barrett recruiting officer of the United States Naval Service will speak at the Sidney court house eight o clock Friday April 20 on The Submarine and Torpedo with chalk drawings to illustrate the talk. Everyone invited to learn about Uncle Sam s Navy. J T M Pearson an engineer for the Interstate Commerce Commission at Kansas City has become a first lieutenant in the engineers division of the officers reserve corps. Mrs Pearson was formerly Miss Hazel King of this city.
Local reports state oil was struck in Logan County at Padroni last Wednesday. Citizens expect wealth from the find, though observers warn such dreams often prove illusory as the gusher hope rides on cautious optimism.
Building activity continues to surge with several new houses planned or under construction. FEF M Woolridge will build a brick dwelling near the High School at about seven thousand dollars. C P Grants residence is among the larger projects with a substantial basement completed. W P Miles erects a cream brick home on his former site for about eight thousand dollars. Bassett home site and other bungalows are noted as part of a peak in construction.
Voters will cast ballots directly for presidential candidates under a new law. A second bill changes county officer terms to four years, starting 1918, with all county officers except the county judge elected to four year terms.
Governor Neville proclaims April 27 as clean up day across the state. Citizens are urged to remove burnable debris to reduce fire risk and disease breeding areas and to clear unsightly refuse. Teachers are asked to hold fire drills and warnings on the day. Don’t forget April 27.
Clyde Gorman of Sidney and Miss Evelyn Peverley of Kimball wed at the bride's parents home in Kimball. Rev O O St John officiated. A wedding feast for sixty followed hosted by Mrs Gates and Mrs McCarty. The couple depart for a home in southeast Kimball County amid warm wishes and presents.
Lawrence Charles Grant of Sidney and Miss Pearle Margaret Finnegan of Lodgepole were united in marriage at the Methodist parsonage in Sidney on Friday April 13 at 2 PM Reverend L E Lewis officiating. The groom is C P Grants son and a builder in training. the bride is from Lodgepole a graduate of that city school. They will live with the eld er Grants until their home is ready. Telegraph offers best wishes for happiness.
Floyd Raymond Saunders and Gladys Marie Artlip, both of Oshkosh, were married in Sidney on Saturday April 14 by County Judge Chambers. Witnesses were David E Elis and Ammenda Artlip. Saunders is nephew of Mrs. N. G. Brewer and has often visited the city, though never on such a momentous occasion.
Charles A. Baughman of Sterling Colorado and Selma V Esping of Peetz were married here on April 17 Judge Chambers performing the service with Miss Lena Jessen and Attorney J L Tewell as witnesses.
Cheyenne County Nebraska in Sidney Cheyenne April 17 1917 board of county commissioners met with Frank X Rihn L R Barlow N H Troelstrup F N Slawson county clerk and others to authorize a twenty five year audit of the Treasurer Sheriff Judge and Clerk offices. Accountancy firm Tulleys and Robinson offered to perform the complete audit at two thousand dollars with a final report to the board. Also ordered survey of Road No 298.
The latest heavy snowfall renews moisture for winter wheat and boosts seeding hopes. Farmers note April 15 as tradition for final small grain sowing, but mild weather could push planting into June and extend the growing season to Christmas.
The county clerk reports a surge in filings with April 1 1916 showing over 700 instruments recorded and April 1 1917 surpassing 1400, double the prior year. The rapid activity suggests land settlement will soon fill most parcels, with land becoming scarce beyond the inexpensive plots.
On a Tuesday evening the Beta Sigma club enjoyed a royal evening at Miss Clara Klein’s pretty home. Twelve guests, all members, attended a two course lunch that contributed to a successful party. Prizes in the games went to Miss Nina Spitler and Miss Esther Devine.
Carl Anderson of Kimball and Miss Rose Johnson of Dix Neb were married at the Methodist parsonage on Wednesday April 18 at 3 30 P M with Pastor L E Lewis officiating They plan to reside north of Kimball Neb postnuptial life together
M. J. Sanders arrived from Norfolk on Wednesday and visited at the home of their daughter Ms. E. D. Worden. The couple will remain as long as their children can persuade them to stay and enjoy reconnecting with many friends made during their former residence in the city.
A. K. Greenlee directed early week planting around the library. He supervised the setting out of trees to beautify and shade the area, showing active involvement in the project.
At the request of the United States Navy the mayor calls young men of Sidney and vicinity ages 17 to 30 eligible for Navy service to meet Lieutenant Waddell at the District Court Room between 10:00 AM and 8:30 PM on Friday and Saturday April 20 and 21.
Lovers of classical music will be entertained Sunday night at St Patrick Academy as students from the music class present a program in the academy auditorium. The event promises refined singing and careful preparation, with tickets at 25 cents and a large audience hoped for. watch for the full program next week.
Mr and Mrs C P Millett travel to their land near Raynor Colorado to stay until the harvest concludes.
A car load of passengers was moved Monday from the Burlington road to the Union Pacific en route from the northwest to Leavenworth Kansas for federal prison confinement. The offense is not specified but suspected treasonous. J M Swenson toured land seekers through the domain Thursday despite stormy weather as tractors paused. The fields beside reflect active work and confident progress, and the speaker pledges pride in the country.
Mrs. Sam Wier and their baby arrived Wednesday and Mr. Wier moved them into the Bradbury furnished home in the south part of town. Mr. Wier is employed at the Jackson Beehive store.
The Ida Weston Rae Players perform at Tobin Opera House on May 4 5 and 6 with Trail of the Lonesome Pine slated for May 16 at the same venue.
