Sweet Clover Grazing Profitable For Dairymen
Experts from the United States Department of Agriculture say lime-rich soils yield sweet clover as the most productive grazing crop. A second-season stand can support two cows per acre from spring to mid summer, with occasional cases of four. Plant early and stock lightly at first, avoid letting clover blossom, and use two fields for continuous grazing. Rotate from older to newer fields, grazing until mid to late July, then plow under old growth for corn or take fall regrowth for later crops. Less bloat risk than other clovers, but take usual precautions.
