Western Nebraska and the panhandle regain normalcy after a major April snow event. Despite travel disruptions and a fatality in Lisco, moisture boosts are welcomed as rail lines recover and roads thaw. Farmers savor moisture and improved prospects as warm sun fades the blanket.
Margaret Finney, 19, daughter of Mr and Mrs Nels Finney of east of Dalton, was brought to Carlson hospital in Dalton on Sunday for an appendicitis operation. Surgeons Dr Hugh Mantor of Sidney and Dr Zarbaugh of Dalton performed the operation with Miss Finney reported to be progressing well on Monday. Poor road conditions due to snow drifts forced Mr Finney to move his daughter by team and sled from their home to Dalton, then by automobile to Sidney.
A six year old boy Arthur Davidson was instantly killed when a revolver in his ten year old brother Elmer's hands discharged on a farm near Henry in Scotts Bluff County. The accident occurred Friday morning at the home of Mr and Mrs Pearl Davidson.
The Cheyenne County 10 Acre Corn Contest opens again with former contestants invited to enroll. Enrollment closes May 1 under county and state rules, targeting at least 30 entries. The aim is to improve county corn through seed type selection and cost analysis to answer farming questions. Interested growers should contact the county agent for rules and enrollment blanks before May 1.
Christ Episcopal church will host over seventy delegates this week for the annual convocation meeting on Wednesday and Thursday. Bishop Beecher, Dean Henry Ives, Rev H H Peck, R R North and other church leaders will attend. The two day program begins tonight with events continuing as planned.
Mrs. A E Tanner resigns from Cheyenne County Trading to lead the dry goods department at Greenlees in Cheyenne. She replaces Miss Hazel Kirkman who left for the Denver Dry Goods company. Tanner began her new duties yesterday morning.
Potter Review reports village trustees reduced Potter and Dix light and power charges. Rates drop from 16c to 15c per KWH for light and from 10c and 3c tiers to 1c? per KWH for power. Nix will buy current from Potter at 1c? per KWH, replacing previous 11c.
State bill 619 passed the senate providing 25000 for a wild game preserve in Morrill Banner and Scottsbluff counties. Governor McMullen favors the project and western sportsmen back the effort. Preserve would include Wildcat mountain area and grazing lands for summer pasture and winter game protection, with farm acreage included to aid wildlife winters. Rep Bern Coulter of Bridgeport originally introduced the measure.
The 1926 Nebraska 10 Acre Winter Wheat Crop Contest enrollments close May 1. Few are enrolled in the county, which may affect the defense of the gold medal. Participants will record labor and costs, yields to be weighed or measured, and any field over 10 acres can enter with a designated enrollment form from the county agent.
Governor W. J. Bulow of South Dakota will greet the National Editorial association party on June 17 at Hot Springs. He will officially welcome the visitors at their first stop in South Dakota during their tour of Nebraska and the Black Hills.
Len Sherwin, prominent cattle feeder with ranches southwest of here, plans shipping five thousand high grade cattle from the south into northeastern Colorado and southwestern Nebraska to boost the regional livestock industry. Freight will exceed 100 cars, routes to Peetz, Colorado, then driven to the Sherwin farms ten miles west.
Nebraska Stockgrowers applauded enactments in the legislature. Brand inspection at open markets will be supervised by the association with a ten cent per head charge. A no-brand policy requires registration of all brands. Transport firms must carry brand certificates on hides offered for shipment. A state sheriff and deputies will enforce laws against theft of farm produce stock and poultry.
A Saturday closing transferred ownership of the Ewing Hardware store at Dalton from B. B. Ewing to Ernie Blome and Millard Storey. The new proprietors assumed control on Monday of the following week.
A snow packed roof collapsed under the weight of wet snow at the Chappell Auto facility. The sidewall gave way and a large roof section caved in, injuring none of the workers but burying several new cars. Debris and brick caused extensive damage. cleanup and reconstruction began after a Monday clearance.
The first regular meeting of Sidney boosters forming a public swimming pool company named Sidney Swimming Pool Inc. elected officers C. R. McDowell president G. P. Kratz vice president Henry Paviat secretary M. H. Robineau treasurer and directors C. S. Radcliffe A. S. Hardy A. J. Jorgenson M. W. Osborn B H. Hutcheson. Committees will seek sites bids and next meeting will hear reports as plans proceed.
Lincoln of House Bil No 223 last week details extend the term of district court officers and county assessors two years. The present clerk Mrs Isola Slawson is extended to six years ending in 1930. County officers to be elected together, shortening presidential-ballot years. Treasurers may succeed themselves.
A Lincoln report identifies T. F. Neighbors, Hsg., as the most promising candidate to succeed the late Judge P. J. Barron of the Seventeenth district, who died last week at his Scottsbluff home.
Easter observances filled Sidney churches with praise as ministers led services from morning to evening. Presbyterians celebrated new members and the Lord's supper with anthem and solos by Donald Shipman and Mrs. F. A. Barger. A large vesper program featured choirs, soloists, and Prof. Arthur Havlovic, praised as a masterful production directed by Mrs. J. W. Johnson.
The Charles P D Green Water Producing Co drilling ten miles west of Bushnell struck a heavy underground water flow Friday. A 350 gallon per minute flow rose from a nine inch casing twenty inches above the sump bed, eighteen feet deep. If further holes can be drilled without reducing flow, the venture promises low cost and potential success.
The Sidney Rotary club held its annual election of officers Friday evening. Elected: President B. L. Uptegrove, vice president Dr. F. A. Barger, secretary E. R. Kratz, treasurer Marius Christensen, directors Tom Poole and Leon Fine.
