Fighting Crabgrass With Better Seed and Lawn Care
Dr. Robert W. Schery explains that crabgrass thrives in poor lawns and shade. A thick perennial turf, bluegrass-fine fescue mow tall, or bentgrass resists invasion. Seed quality matters. 2000 lots showed no crabgrass seeds. Use herbicides after several mowings, install underground watering systems for drought, and buy sound seed with Kentucky bluegrass, fine fescue, or bentgrass. Quality seed costs more but saves in labor and long-term results.

Size Of Corn Seed Affects Stand Growth And Yield
Lincoln The size of corn seed affects stand and growth, says University of Nebraska Extension agronomist L N Leininger. Studies show seed size and shape have little impact if average or larger seed is used, with round and flat seeds performing similarly. Small seeds germinate well in warm, moist soils but can yield stunted plants and lower yields in cold wet years, making them not a bargain.
