Topdressing Time and Rate for Nebraska Pastures

University of Nebraska Extension soils specialist M. D. Weldon urges careful timing and rates for spring fertilizer topdressing. For cool season pastures, apply around mid April with 40 to 69 pounds of nitrogen per acre on non irrigation, adjusting for soil moisture. irrigated pastures use about 60 pounds per acre mid April and again mid July. Warm season grasses respond less. avoid early topdressing and delay pasturing until mid June with rotation grazing to prevent crowding and erosion.
