Anchored Mulch Improves Wind Resistance in Soil Packing

A USDA study finds straw and hay mulch held best when anchored to the ground using soil packing machines. Disk packers with smooth or cutaway disks 4 inches apart anchored up to 96 percent against 85 mph winds, with V shaped 72 percent and plate punch 62 percent. Cutaway disks excel with heavier mulch. spacing disks 8 inches apart for one pass or 12 inches for two passes reduces soil penetration and disk clogging while achieving 2 to 3 inches depth to secure mulch.
