In a case from Illinois and Pennsylvania, unemployed roofer Robert Nuzum advertised to sell a kidney to pay debts. Harold Jacobs, a Phillipstown farmer with a failing kidney, offered to buy. Dr. Keith Hruska of Barnes Hospital halted the plan, citing ethical concerns and the country’s hard times. Jacobs had no real hope for the transplant, and Nuzum returned home with 75 dollars for expenses.
