Bridgeport forms its first residential paving district on Ninth and Tenth Avenues East after enough residents objected. A second district to connect Ninth and Tenth is in the works as petitions extend to other city areas.
A nine month old baby weighing ten pounds was listed as very critical at Memorial Hospital. The sheriff and county attorney are investigating after the child was brought in at 6 40 a m. Intramuscular fluids are being given as doctors treat malnutrition. Parents were located at the hospital at 2 30 p m.
Two new city councilmen Fer ris Preble and Rudy Munderloh will take office tonight after last week’s election to replace J. Fred Thompson and Jack H. Lowe who did not seek reelection. The old council meets at 7 30 to wind up business then the new members will be sworn in.
A comprehensive program explaining stubble mulching summer fallow ground will be presented tomorrow at 1 30 p m on the Herb Hruska farm three miles north of the junctions of Highway 30 and 19. County agricultural agencies and farm equipment dealers back the event and invite all farmers to attend this Panhandle soil conservation demonstration.
The Civic Music Association shifts its kick off from a dinner at Sidney Country Club to a dessert and coffee meeting at the Sidney Elks Club at 7 30 p m Thursday. Development announced for Cheyenne County with five new oil well locations across Farr Field Braden Oil and British-American and Ohio Oil Co projects. Ohio Oil down to 2960 feet and crews prepping for additional spuds while one well was plugged in Harper Oil's region.
A seven member committee of Nebraska health and hospital leaders will tour the state for four days starting in Lincoln to assess general hospital conditions. They will visit Geneva Orleans Stratton Benkelman Imperial Sidney Dalton Oshkosh Lewellen Gothenburg and Aurora, with a Sidney stop expected late Wednesday. The Cheyenne County Memorial Hospital board will hold its regular meeting Wednesday so visitors can attend and dine at the hospital.
Local Republicans report several prospects for Sidney postmaster as applications reopen after a Civil Service review. The $5,800 yearly job, tied to growth and office volume, draws competitive interest with three to four likely finalists and influence shaping the exam outcome. Weldon Stewart currently acts as postmaster.
County Attorney Pat Heaton said an inquest would be held this week into the Saturday night death of William C. Earnhart a 28 year old Lodgepole resident. Earnhart was a front seat passenger in a 1953 convertible driven by Kenneth Oaken of Lodgepole. The car went off the road near the junction of two county roads eight miles northeast of Sidney. Two passengers Gladys Oaken 15 and Joyce Rogers 16 were thrown from the car. Rogers remained hospitalized with possible broken back and internal injuries. Oaken and his sister were released. The car suffered about 600 dollars in damage. Earnhart a 1949 Lodgepole High School graduate and Navy veteran died from a severe skull fracture. Funeral services are set for Wednesday at Lodgepole Methodist Church with burial in Chappell. Zimmer Funeral Home of Chappell in charge. The death is the county’s first automobile fatality of 1956. Earnhart was farming with his father at the time of death.
Morrill County farmer Wm Schaffert and president of Western Nebraska Organized Agriculture will speak at the Wheat Belt Public Power District annual meeting on April 14. The district announces two new features including ending member voting for board directors due to the change from a rural cooperative to a public power district. A free movie will be shown at the Fox Theatre for youngsters.
Snow fell yesterday across Cheyenne County but failed to become a million dollar snow. Value estimated in the low thousands with average depth near one inch and moisture equivalent under a tenth of an inch. Farmers welcomed the light moisture while noting dry conditions favor cutworms. warmer weather is forecast by the Scottsbluff weather bureau.
State Museum experts evaluate value of prehistoric bones unearthed in Spearow Field after two preparators found remains including a giant rhino bone. Findings may be preserved for future research with support from Ohio Oil Co and local landowners, boosting Cheyenne County’s historical profile.
