Lawmakers Pass 82 12 Vote on 24 Million Budget

The house approved an appropriation bill by 82 to 12 last Friday, sending it to the senate finance committee for about two weeks of review and potential changes before conference committees reconcile differences. The measure totals roughly 24 million dollars for the coming biennium, with notable additions for high school training and vocational education but still below governor Bryan's recommendations. The university faces a substantial cut, and state fair provisions were killed, signaling its probable demise for the next biennium. A joint conference committee considered voluntary 20 percent pay cuts for state officials, while several senate passed bills addressed bank charters, electricity charges, and meat inspection methods. The insurance moratorium bill passed with a governor's signature, directing rules on life companies and premium grace periods. A two-year mortgage moratorium was struck down as unconstitutional, with further tests pending in Lancaster county. A tax repeal and code revision moves continued, with debates over department structure and salaries. A proposed 30-day adjournment resolution faced mixed reception, and Colorado allows interstate truck operations with reciprocity. A 350 gallon farm wagon tank is for sale at M. W. Osborn Motor Co.
