Over 2 000 students from 42 schools travel to Sidney for a two day music contest on April 11 and 12 featuring vocal classes from medium to low ranges, numerous instrumental solos and ensembles including brass, woodwind and percussion. A finale program at 7 30 p m Friday will unite the outstanding units and the admission is 50 cents.
Doctors report limited polio vaccine on hand with unlikely quick replenishment. Druggists warn inventory may last about a week for offices and end of April for supply houses at the earliest. HEW is blamed for heavy control and mismanagement of production and distribution.
Jack Ramm, wire chief for Northwestern Bell in Sidney since March 1, 1954, is promoted to plant supervisor of the North Platte district. Vince Maliszewski of Omaha replaces him in Sidney, coming from a post as central office foreman in Omaha.
Part of the wreckage of a Navy plane that crashed near Kimball February 16 has been bought by Panhandle Compressed Steel Corporation of Kimball. The Navy salvaged much of the equipment four miles south of Kimball. the firm dismantles the fuselage and wings and must remove the wreckage by April 12.
Cheyenne County filed an $11,296.33 judgment suit in district court against Helmut Heitman Jr who has lived in a state hospital since 1933 and his guardian C. F. W. Pittack. Commissioners Fleming Coulter and Hunt bring the action claiming tax money spent on Heitman’s care and no revenue from crops on Heitman’s 20 percent land interest.
Sidney hosts the Interstate Volunteer Firemen Association tournament on Sunday June 30 at the Cheyenne County Fairgrounds. Eleven communities compete including Dalton defending champion, with teams from Peetz Sedgwick Julesburg Ovid in Colorado and Big Springs Chappell Lodgepole Sidney Gurley Potter in Nebraska. Four events include hose changing placing hose on two story building and coupling with one length of hose. Each community may enter one eight man team and training sessions are under way.
The Cheyenne County Historical Association schedules its first annual meeting for 8 pm Wednesday April 24 at Sidney City Auditorium. President Dick Herman presides over a nominating committee of Jack Knicely M. W. Osborn and Guy V. Doran. Speakers Doug Reetz and Dick Herman will discuss local history and economic parallels involving Ft. Sidney and the Sioux Ordnance Depot.
The Sidney Post Office prepares for business as usual but awaits a possible directive from Postmaster General Arthur Summerfield to end Saturday deliveries unless Congress provides 47 million dollars. Rep Wilson cited Summerfield warning of furloughs, halted equipment purchases, and cutbacks if funds are not approved, with a House subcommittee approving 17 million.
Northwestern Bell released new telephone directories for Sidney Ordville Potter and Gurley. The books are smaller with four fewer white pages and twelve fewer yellow pages yet contain more listings due to denser type. J R Miller Sidney exchange manager says the reductions reflect local population and business changes and Omaha produced this year’s edition. Subscribers without a book should contact the business office at 5511.
A combined Loyalty Day and Past Commanders Banquet will be held Thursday May 2 at the Yendis Party room. The annual dinner honoring past heads of the VFW and auxiliary blends with the observance usually held May 1. Social hour begins at 6 p.m. with dinner at 7 p.m.
A Cheyenne County storm relented as two inches of new snow and moisture melted under easterly and north winds. High speeds up to 50 mph caused highway closures, rural schools to close, and reduced depot activity. Farmers welcome moisture for winter wheat and expect improved crop prospects into summer. Northeastern Colorado reports heavy snows while Logan County looks to better crop and range conditions.

Ft Sidney officials announce two new categories for the Days parade humorous and religious alongside historical groups in a three type competition for cash prizes. First second and third prizes are 75 50 and 25 dollars per category with a 50 dollar grand prize for a first prize winner. A noncompetitive grouping is listed and entries are due by May 15 ahead of the June 21 22 events and parade at 10 am on June 22.
In the panhandle Safety Patrol district Sgt. Dale Justice reports a busy March with 1 428 violation cards 458 warnings and 409 motorist assists. They removed 290 highway obstructions investigated 50 accidents recovered 3 stolen cars and issued 50 safety tasks. Arrests totaled 506 with 394 moving violations 15 drunken driving 287 speeding and 9 reckless driving.
County Assessor Roy Gish reported only 1,125 personal property schedules written in Sidney with about 1,700 more due by the April 20 deadline. A 50 percent penalty applies to schedules filed after the deadline, risking penalties for late filers.
Local elevator sources quote No 1 Wheat at 200 dollars per bushel and No 2 Wheat at 1.99 dollars per bushel today. The figures reflect market levels for milling and feed grades in a regional grain trade update.
Heavy wet snow from a three day storm melted and toppled from roofs and trees as sun and warmth returned. Pedestrians were soaked by cascading snow and some were caught unaware but no complaints were reported. The thaw brings hopeful signs to farms statewide after three grim years.
