A contemplative prayer asking for grace to forgive enemies and to welcome repentant souls. It recalls Jesus words to the thief about paradise and to the woman for her son. The prayer asks guidance to love mothers, sisters, brothers, and neighbors and to embody divine will in daily life.
Secretary of the Army H Higgins tells Sioux Ord nance Depot workers to return home and not worry about layoffs. He notes payroll at Sioux is about 841 employees, one of the region’s largest Army payrolls, and promises no interruption to jobs in the foreseeable future. He cites economy and uncertain defense concepts but offers reassurance after talks in Washington with local officials and lawmakers.
Commerce official Victor Roterus told Washington visitors that western Nebraska can draw industry if communities offer available land and favorable conditions. He emphasized regional cooperation, local initiative, and targeted information for prospective plants, noting skilled labor from farming regions and potential for lighter industries.
April 15 marks the last date for farmers to apply to join the Conservation Reserve program. Applicants may gain until May 15 or up to 30 extra days to secure signatures. Cheyenne County has seven farms with 748 acres under contract, plus 242 additional acres added by two contract modifications.
Local elevator sources listed a wheat price of 190 dollars per bushel today. The figure reflects current market quotes and may influence trading decisions for buyers and sellers in the region.
Easter sunrise service at 6 o clock Sunday morning will be held at the bandshell under the Sidney Minister s Association sponsorship. In stormy weather it moves to Light Memorial Presbyterian Church on Linden Street. KSID will broadcast the service. The order includes trumpeters Donald Johnson Jan Meier Leland Lewis directed by George Hinn with a sermon by Rev Willard Norton of the SOD Community Church.
Light rain at eleven o'clock brought .06 inch to Sidney as mild showers continued overnight. Cooler air moved into the Panhandle and southeastern Wyoming with forecasts of scattered showers. Thursday morning skies were clear but clouded by afternoon, turning partly cloudy by evening while Douglas and Cheyenne Counties reported traces of rain from evening showers.
A new oil field eleven miles north and four east of Potter shows a two-well production plan exceeding 500 barrels per week. The No. 1 Wills well reports 309 bpd from the J sand, south of the No. 1 Mather which yielded 200 bpd. Dry-hole activity persists, but offset drilling is expected with no water in the pay section. Additional wells and sites are planned nearby as industry eyes further expansion.
The county filing deadline passed with little last minute activity. W E Gehrig and Oscar E Copley filed for county commissioner 2nd district and county clerk respectively, while incumbents held other offices. The Oct election may see petitions still alter some posts.
Sidney businessman Bill Gehrig longtime mortuary operator announces his run for County Commissioner in the second district on the Republican ticket opposing incumbent George H. Fleming who runs for reelection on the Democratic ticket.
In the 3rd District Republican ticket are Donald Thies and George D. Larson. Democrat candidate is Wm. G. Smith. No candidate filed for County Superintendent of Schools, a post long held by Miss Edith Oldershaw who retires. The $3,600 yearly job will be filled by appointment by the county commissioners if vacancy occurs or no election is held.
Sidney Beef Co begins operations in two to three weeks under Dick and Dave Neubauer. The former Star Packing Co plant is converted into a modern beef slaughtering installation with a 250 carcass cooler and a 14 hour refrigeration capacity for 100 carcasses. Sales manager Harris Johnson, formerly with a major packer, says capacity is the main concern while workmen install plumbing wiring and interior. Target date for operation is April 21 with initial 20 to 25 employees, rail and trucking arrangements planned to ship products to markets. Interior photos appear on Page Six.
Rep A L Miller of Nebraska and others believe President Eisenhower may propose a compromise after vetoing the farm price freeze bill. The plan reportedly could raise the support price for Benson’s farm program by eleven cents to 1.89 while keeping the current non supported crops’ income prospects. Officials warn a broader loss in gross farm income could follow, offsetting gains from higher supported prices with losses in Wheat, Corn, Dairy and other commodities.
