A Sidney Telegraph plea backs a new weekly sports feature on local individuals who have taken up non team sports. The editor hopes to show why they do what they do and offer tips for readers to join in, highlighting activities like golf fishing hunting handball swimming tennis and cross country skiing.
The National Basketball Rules Committee voted in Philadelphia to permit dunking during games for the 1976 77 season reversing a decade long ban. Coach Johnny Orr of Michigan hailed the move as thrilling while Robert Parish Centenary College praised it for its possible impact. Technical fouls on pregame warmups or intermissions will be called and two free throws will be awarded for bench conduct technicals.
The deadline for registering for this season's girls softball is April 12. Registration blanks may be picked up at area ngh schools and should be returned to the schools.
Sidney's boys and girls track teams head to the Kimball Invitational with eight squads from Kimball Chadron Gordon Alliance Gering and Torrington joining for a full day of events. Injuries and doubtful runners thin the Raider lineup though several athletes are expected to compete. The Sidney girls make their first Invitational meet appearance with all events run and sprinter Dewann Dinkel listed as doubtful. Field events start at 9 am with preliminaries at 9:30 am and finals at 1 pm.

Mark Rogers of Sidney earned fifth place with 77 as the Raiders finished sixth among 12 teams at the North Platte Invitational led by North Platte’s 69 medalist John Peterson. Steve Cook 83 and Jay Schmidt 84 helped Sidney, who resume action Saturday at Kimball Invitational beginning at 9 30 am with the same four golfers.
A busy weekend for track fans as area teams join multiple meets. Girls action includes Bayard Invitational with Sidney St Pat's Potter Gurley Dalton Dix squaring off against Alliance St Agnes Melbeta Jyman Bushnell Sunflower Harnsburg in Class 1. Events start 8:30 am with prelims at 10 and finals at 1. Boys see Oshkosh and Ogallala meets featuring St Pat's Dalton Gurley Chappell Lodgepole plus 10 other schools.
