Cheyenne County reports 1936 soil conservation funds totaling 195000 after a new 8585 payment. Three shipments have been received for 1016 contracts with about 400 contracts unpaid. Delays noted stem from contract irregularities or misunderstandings as farmers await notices.
Nebraska’s 15 federal savings and loan associations, including one in Sidney, bolster a home construction upswing. Assets rose from 3.26 million to 4.07 million by March 1 1936, with direct reduction loans climbing to 3.42 million. Shareholder accounts grew from 1,744 to 2,199. Insurance by the Federal Savings and Loan Insurance Corporation protects up to 5,000 per account.
The Sterling division of the Burlington railroad from Alliance to Sterling received the safety trophy for an outstanding safety record among the railroad’s divisions. Charles D. Sill, Sidney agent, attended the Sterling meeting. The division reported only one employe injury that year, a record not equalled by other divisions.
The resettlement office has received 4000 for seed loans for Cheyenne county farmers. Commissioners increase office force to handle applications and a rush is expected in coming days. Further funds may be available if unspent. Farmers urged to visit the resettlement office for application details.
County Treasurer Louis Wasem reports State Auditor Price advised treasurers to take delinquent tax payments with interest and proceed under the new law. If the law is later struck down, treasurers face no liability. The measure has increased payments and generated many inquiries as the sheriff’s distress warrant drive continues.
County Attorney Gerald J McGin ley charged William Baker a Holdrege man with manslaughter in the death of Barbara Jear Brown five of Oshkosh struck by Baker s truck as she crossed the street with two companions. Baker pleaded innocent and posted 1000 bond with preliminary hearing set for April 10. Sheriff Fred Taylor said witnesses reported Baker was driving at a high rate of speed.
Ross D. Stratton, 42, a Kimball bootblack and familiar town figure, died in hospital late Monday after being found unconscious on a side street Friday night. Authorities fear foul play as a post mortem was ordered by the county attorney.
Alliance hosts the western Nebraska music contest with 1600-plus high school students in 15 events at Alliance municipal auditorium. About 265 pupils join massed band and similar numbers in massed girls glee club. Judges include J A Grubb Arthur W Henderson and John S Leick.
Martha Marie Gerler 45 wife of farmer Joseph Gerler of Potter area died Wednesday night after six months of ill health. Born Frohna Mo February 26 1892, she lived there until 1920, married in 1921, then moved to Cheyenne county. Survived by husband daughter Laverna sister Emma Jacobs and five brothers. Funeral Sunday at 2 PM from St Pauls Lutheran with Rev Boehnke. burial in St Paul cemetery.
H V Anderson, manager of the North Platte Valley Poultry Marketing association, forecast a favorable year for turkey growers after a Monday meeting. He cited good crops and ample feed, predicting cheaper costs for finishers versus 1936 and a high market price due to overall meat declines.
Senator A L Miller protests a proposed refund on the tax on airplane fuel arguing farmers deserve fuel exemptions before considering policy. Discussion includes possibility of United Air Lines moving its mid continent headquarters from Cheyenne to Nebraska as lawmakers debate Brady atkinson bill for reimbursements of gas tax paid beyond aeronautics commission requirements.
The Lions Club hosts the second annual kite contest Sunday at 3 PM on the north hill. Judges Dr. Leo J. Thomas Ray Babcock and Dr. R. S. Baker will award cash prizes and merchandise from Central Shoe Store Powell Hardware Greenlees Montgomery Ward Wes G Penney Drug Western Drug Sidney Drug C A West. Awards honor largest and smallest kites most unusual design highest flying by a child under nine 9 to 12 and over 12 with 16 and under entrants allowed.
The Kings Daughters earned over one hundred dollars Monday night from their annual Easter Monday dance. A satisfactory advance ticket sale and an unusually good box office sale boosted the tidy net profit. All net proceeds will go to worthy charitable purposes in the community.
The Cheyenne county spelling contest for fifth through eighth graders will be held at the Sidney junior high school auditorium on Saturday April 10. County Superintendent Gertrude Nelson announced the date and invited all good spellers to participate. All schools may enter. A new champion will be crowned this year with seventh and eighth graders competing for the oral championship and also to qualify for the Nebraska championship in Omaha. WPA crews resume curb and gutter work in the west part of town replacing old curbing with uniform curb and gutters. Crews on 14th and 15th avenues and Jackson street prepare streets for leveling and bituminous mat surfacing after weather delays.
Speedy Schaeffer sustains rib injuries after a match with Buck Estes and may miss the main event against Bobby Chick next Monday at the Sidney city auditorium. If Schaeffer fails medicals, Estes will substitute. An x ray was ordered to check for fracture as Chick and Schaeffer set for a best two of three falls.
Telegraphed reports say Congress approved a two million dollar fund to combat grasshoppers with Nebraska to receive over 125000. County Agent J C Swinbank urges farmers to monitor hatches starting late April and apply bran bait before hatch to curb movement. Leaders expect timely disbursement before April 15 to maximize impact.
Jacob Pedrett, Swiss born grandfather of western Nebraska certified potato industry, and Mrs Pedrett celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with a family reunion and open house in Kimball. Pedrett, 80, arrived in 1885. Mrs Pedrett, 73, is German born. They wed in Hastings and later moved to Kimball county. Pedrett helped pioneer a potato crop to rival wheat and served Kimball County in the 1929-30 legislature along with roles as school director county assessor and road overseer. They are parents to four children.
Unusual quiet surrounds Sidney's pre election period with a small vote anticipated next Tuesday unless campaigns spark activity. Three councilmen and two school board members appear on the ballot, with Haworth Ells Thompson retiring, and Smith Bales incumbents seeking reelection.
The civilian conservation corps announced that three fewer CCC camps would be operated in Nebraska during April May and June than in the first three months this year. Two soil conservation camps at Spalding and Nelson will be closed when their projects are completed. A state park camp in the Wildcat hills state game preserve in Scotts Bluff and Banner counties will be discontinued April 1. Twenty camps will remain in operation. Fourteen will be on soil conservation projects, two on bureau of reclamation projects and one each on a national forest wildlife conservation national monument and state park project.
Clarke-McNary seedling trunks will depart from Nebraska National Forest at Halsey on Saturday April 3, with 1.6 million trees planned to ship from Halsey and Fremont. Cheyenne county ordered 7600 seedlings this year as part of a long running planting program. Watkins and Maxwell oversee the program and expect to supervise the shipment. Unfavorable weather delayed digging, and the 1937 supply has been fully requested by farmers.
A county office hosts a sign up team of agricultural conservation committee members and clerks assisting farmers to complete papers for the 1937 soil program. State fieldmen say forms must be filed by the last day of April to qualify. Local officers notify farmers when to come in to maintain orderly processing.
Local talent will present the drama Death Takes the Steering Wheel at the Christian church next Tuesday April 6 at 7 45 p m. One dozen local citizens fill roles from judge to coroner with a jury of 12 men and women.
Knights of Pythias from Sidney and western Nebraska towns gathered in Gering on Wednesday night for a district meeting. Representatives attended from Cheyenne Kimball Sidney Alliance Chadron Scottsbluff Gering and other cities. An Odd Fellows hall banquet preceded the program.
Two years of favorable crops and fair prices could spark a record farm building boom in Nebraska, says Ruby M. Lopez assistant extension engineer. A survey of 5,500 farm women shows over half would spend about 3200 for remodeling with basements central heating running water and other improvements. Younger couples favor a combined living dining area while some prefer separate rooms. A follow up survey will map the ideal farm home for Nebraska.
George Sheldon charged with embezzling 249.32 of county funds while serving as special deputy sheriff in delinquent tax collection. He is to have a hearing before County Judge Robert A. Barlow when County Attorney P. J. Heaton returns from Lincoln. Sheldon appeared Monday and was released on his own recognizance.
The Telegraph News will begin publishing poems by Winifred Wolf next Tuesday. Mrs Wolf is praised by critics and her verses cover subjects of special interest to local residents.
