Winter-damaged Nebraska wheat shown in south central regions
University of Nebraska agronomist J. C. Swinbank reports reports of winter damaged wheat from York Fillmore and Jefferson counties and Holdrege. He notes some fields were hit harder due to early planting or lack of protection while late planted or snow sheltered fields tolerate better. Recovery hinges on spring conditions and stand survival. 65 percent standing allows normal yield, 50 percent or more dead means losses, with weed pressures possible if stands are poor and spraying may be needed.
