Land opening at Gooding to affect Shoshone and Heyburn futures

The land board sets September 24 as the date to open 70 000 acres along a crescent from east of Shoshone to south of Gooding. Half tributary to Shoshone, half to Gooding, the tract promises growth for both towns and favors Shoshone’s prospects. Heyburn builds a bridge, plans a town hall, and Barker’s Heyburn brick plant gains praise as Lincoln county industry. Struble showcases Barker brick samples in the Columbia hotel.

Salmon River Dam Project in Idaho Recounted

The State Land Board approves a Carey act Salmon River project in Twin Falls and possibly Owyhee counties. A 200 foot high concrete dam in a deep canyon will create a 300000 acre foot reservoir, with a mile long tunnel and 40 miles of canals delivering water to 150000 acres of prime Idaho land.

Heyburn, facing many infantile troubles, has nonetheless achieved remarkable progress. The town has built bridges, town halls, and brick yards, showing greater accomplishments relative to its difficulties and resilience within the county.

State Endorses Plans of Big Lost River Irrigation Project

Charles Spierman assistant state engineer reports progress on the Big Lost River Land and Irrigation project. Construction on canals is satisfactory though high river waters hinder dam work. Opening date set for September 4 at Powell on the Mackay branch. Arco and Blackfoot offer lodging with sleepers and meals arranged nearby. Lower tract townsite not fixed. Reckless shooting blamed in Shoshone with warnings

Reports from Shoshone describe several reckless shootings causing near disasters or injuries. Incidents include a bullet through a window puncturing a wall and a bullet lodging in a piano. Community leaders call for penalties and educational action to curb careless gun handling by youths and adults alike.

Shoshone Falls Plant Powers Twin Falls Area Progress

Last week the Shoshone Falls plant began supplying electricity to Twin Falls with one 850 HP turbine. Planned expansion will exceed 22 000 HP. Jerome line poles and insulators are in place. Bell line hookup will give Jerome direct communication with Shoshone. Jerome hotel furniture arrived. town wells pumped by gas engine soon to be electric. A bank building rises for the October 1 opening backed by the Jerome town company.

Great water wheel patent from Thermopolis men

L C Robinson and J B Gaylord of Thermopolis Wyoming patent a water lifting device for irrigation. A large cylinder carries a spiral tube with one end at the surface and the other entering the hollow cylinder axle, with a delivery pipe attached.

Pneumatic Cylinder Water Engine Tied to Boats in Water

A described device uses a cylinder resting on two boats and a current to turn it. Each rotation dips water into a pipe then vents to air, compressing cushions to balance and push water to a target height. No valves needed, claimed as simple and potentially pivotal for arid west development.

Milner disturbance after Greek labor strike follows blast

An Austrian workman set off a charge near Milner injuring a Greek worker. Greeks demanded the superintendent’s dismissal, went on strike for higher wages, and later pursued the Austrian for two miles, beating him. Authorities monitor tensions as workers are paid off.

W D Garlock returned from a week away to Shoshone and found his report of a burned old depot and a new brick depot was false. He says locals had been misinformed about the project and that the current building will continue serving the public for about twenty more years.

Arsenal of Old Timers On Display At Journal Exhibit

The Journal's office hosts a loan exhibition of relics from Chas. J. Lisle including an 18 pound muzzle loading buffalo gun once owned by Sitting Bull a Remington rifle captured near Manila and a Mauser ride with Spanish crest used by Filipino and American volunteers. The collection aims to go to the State Historical Society at the state house in Boise.

Screen Cost Him 50 Dollars at Ketchum Mill

W N Pierce of Ketchum traveled to Salt Lake to fetch a vital screen for the Boston Idaho Mining Company mill on Boyle mountain. The missing item delayed startup, costing 50 dollars for a small roll of wire netting. Pierce reports the mine and mill are in satisfactory condition. C B Dunton of Portland also visited the Carbonate Hill property at Galena on Cherry creek to oversee a 1750 foot drift.

Ore Carriers Progress Amid Snow Damage Near Pike Claim

The lead reports good ore in spots along the route though not yet at the target price. An air compressor plant runs on water power. A last winter snow slide damaged upper works. They possess high grade ore but are not ready to discuss milling plans.

Rev Edwards goes to Idaho conference in Boise

Rev. A. Edwards departs Tuesday for Boise to attend the Idaho conference of the Methodist church. Bishop Earl Cranston presides. The conference includes over 100 ministers from Idaho and eastern Oregon. Appointments will be read Monday. the Shoshone church shows strong finances and membership.
