Governor Gooding questioned Lincoln county sheep counts on the assessment roll. The county has 153 657 sheep but only 76 828 are listed. Assessor Wheeler partially equalized by assessing half the total, noting the law requires a year of ownership and six months grazing limits.
In Shoshone this week remarkable vegetation specimens have been shown. McMahon raised alfalfa reaching 5 feet 7 inches, Sima from eight miles north sent alfalfa 7 feet 8 inches, Wingand nine miles west presented oats head 19 inches long with 282 kernels. A few acres of this grain could beat stock in any trust.
John W. Monarch, tied to a 4 mile ditch project for the Big Wood river people, endured a late night runaway 25 miles north of Shoshone. In lava beds the yoke strap broke, the tongue dropped, and the buckboard pitched into a lava hole. A rider jumped clear and Monarch halted the team. only the buckboard pole was broken.
Journal editors visit the Big Wood River project near Alberta in Lincoln County to inspect canal and dam construction. The report highlights 12 miles of main canal nearly complete, three dams including a vast reservoir, and a vast water system with substantial earth and rockwork, diversions, and sand traps. Settlers increasingly move to the Alberta tract as the Idaho Irrigation Company advances work and opens land for settlement, with Gooding tract opening planned for September 24.
Enterprising Haddock firm announces new real estate and loan business in Shoshone Idaho with Paul S Haddock and Rush Haddock. Paul will practice law while Rush focuses on real estate and loans. Locals hail Shoshone as a growing city central to Idaho. outsiders see strong prospects.
The annual teachers examination will be held in Shoshone on August 22 23 and 24 at the County Superintendent's office. It covers life diplomas state certificates first second and third grade certificates and primary certificates. An eighth grade pupil examination will occur at the same time and location. Mrs C R Wheeler traveled to Heyburn Wednesday to visit her sister Mrs Campbell wife of the Heyburn postmaster.
Postmaster at Gooding reports Journal not received for three to four weeks until late in week, arriving by stage from Soldier. Publishers say papers are mailed from Shoshone Friday afternoon for outbound trains and urge prompt reports if delivery is delayed. Eagles, Gooding postmaster, will forward the letter to proper officers to identify the responsible party.
Guy C. Barnum of Big Lost River Land and Irrigation Co travels to Twin Falls Shoshone and Hailey to arrange transportation for crowds attending the Powell opening on September 4. Short Line confirms half fares for laborers aiding the works saving $5.25 per man. Four sleeping cars chartered from Boise Salt Lake and Ogden for opening day service and possibly one from Weiser to nearby towns.
Governor Fishes for boiled trout after a visit in town Sunday night en route to Boise. Elmer jokes about catching a big fat trout asleep and kicking it out before it was measured. Balderston and editor Balderston chase with rod and gear along the stream as the hunt continues.
Prof. R. W. Paris, former principal of the State Academy at Pocatello, resigned to take charge of a bank after years at the academy. He was seen in Shoshone visiting friends Sunday before leaving to assume banking duties. Commentary critiques the public school system and notes a need for reform to attract capable leaders.
Village Board met in reg ular adjourned session with CF Bonien as chairman and councilmen Gooding Custer and Mc Mahon. Minutes read and approved. bills allowed and warrants to be drawn for street and bridge and general fund items. marshal’s license revenue reported for July. motion to demand city license arrears three months in advance. Fentress Hill of Twin Falls company transacted business in Shoshone.
