Caldwell boys dominated Shoshone with Walter Sebree pitching a strong game and Wad Swope catching for Shoshone facing defensive gaps. The crowd favored Caldwell as the team showed sportsmanship with praise from their hosts.
Road Overseer J W Wheeler began work on a new road from Shoshone to the Cedars on Snake river with a force of men. The enterprise is funded by $600 from county and Shoshone business men to connect Cassia county and southeast via a direct route, boosting travel and business and aiding Twin Falls Irrigation in moving materials. a new steel bridge over Snake river will increase the route’s appeal and traffic to Lincoln county business.
The Weiser World urges Republicans to learn from the Democratic primaries and unite behind the ticket. It counsels burying differences, respecting the honest will of the majority, and aligning to support their candidate, warning against internal factional fighting.
James Gorman, about 20, of Murray Utah, was severely crushed when a moving train on a side track near Waucanza east of Shoshone struck him as he tried to steal a ride. The leg was amputated between knee and ankle at Pocatello by Dre Bean Castle and Howard. He was taken to Mrs. Burbank’s home and is recovering. A brother in law arrived from Murray to arrange care. He had money but was attempting to hitchhike.
The sixth annual Institute of Lincoln County will be held in Shoshone from August 19 at 9 a.m. to August 27. Renowned instructors have been secured and the event aims to be the most interesting yet. The program invites all teachers, prospective teachers, high school pupils, and anyone with educational interests to attend and participate in two weeks of work to better prepare for the coming year. Primary held in Hagerman on August 9 1902 elected nine delegates to the state convention. In F R Gooding office a strong vote produced a list: Geo L Eveleth A I McMahon Claude Ferguson F T Disney Ren A Brewster J H Donaldson T W Parry Leah M Burnside Emia Davies.
C. C. Haynes guided a party in a concord coach to Shoshone Falls and Blue Lakes last Saturday, returning Sunday evening. The travelers included Robert Reynolds and wife, Mrs J. E. Hunter, Mrs. D. A. Barlane, and Mrs. A. D. Puree, all of Pocatello, who described the outing as pleasant and the scenery as grand.
William Daniels and Hattie Sinclair were married Wednesday afternoon at the home of J J Coates in Gooding. Judge W J Smith officiated. The couple, known in Shoshone and Gooding, received many useful presents and were wished a long and happy life by the Journal and friends.
W A Durham was arrested at Blackfoot on a warrant charging the June 23 killings of E M Fritz and S B Donaldson on Pocatello creek. He denies guilt, says he knows who did it, and led prosecutors to the murder scene while with Par Farnam. Durham, a Blackfoot blacksmith, is held on the charge as authorities pursue his full account.
Mr. Ole Garrett of Caldwell was shot while crossing Wood river near Ketchum when his wife handed him a loaded shotgun. He slipped and fired both loads into his arm, prompting amputation and death five hours later. He leaves a wife in Ketchum. remains shipped to Pennsylvania.
A jail fire early Wednesday at Blaine county jail caused by a defective lamp and improvised wick alarmed five inmates who escaped smoke and flames with quick deputy sheriff action. The incident renews calls for a new court house and safe jail funded by a five mill levy, as officials cite risks and costs to taxpayers.
