Shiner marks Fire Prevention Week October 3 to 9 urging cleanup at homes and yards to remove fire hazards. Delegates from 56 towns will gather October 10 for the Guadalupe Firemen and Fire Marshals Convention hosted by the Shiner Fire Department.
Mrs Rud Tkac 85 of 323 Givens Ave San Antonio died September 16 1965 at a local hospital. Private funeral services were held September 18 at Mission Park Funeral Chapel with Rev Kenneth F Brown officiating. Burial followed in San Antonio. She was born in Praha Texas daughter of John and Anna Miculka natives of Czechoslovakia. Survivors include three sons Raymond Vladik Tkac and Joseph Tkac of Weimar, three sisters from Flatonia Waco and Floresville and a brother from Floresville. She had lived in San Antonio 24 years. Her parents and several siblings preceded her in death.

A turkey shoot will be held at Wied Hall on the Shiner Hallettsville Highway 90 A starting at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 26. Attendees bring their own guns while ammunition is provided. prizes include turkeys and other awards with proceeds benefiting the Sacred Heart School Band Fund.
Hallettsville man Robert J. Pesek has been named a district deputy in the Knights of Columbus Texas statewide organization. Dr. Joseph G. Murphy announced Pesek’s new post, noting he will supervise activities of several councils in the Hallettsville area.
Henry E Koenig longtime Yoakum resident and Hub City VFW Post Commander dies at 50 after a heart attack. Services at St Josephs Catholic Church included rifle salute and Taps with military rites. Survivors include wife Maxine and five children, plus parents and siblings. Koenig served in World War II and the Eastern Mediterranean, later worked as service manager at Lincol Mercury. Lieutenant Andrew Summers Rowan noted for delivering the Message to Garcia in the Spanish American War.
In Dallas two 17 year old South Oak Cliff High students face aggravated assault with a motor vehicle charges after a drag race near the campus left teacher Jack McVay 32 in serious condition and passenger Rodney Stratman 25 in fair condition. The crash occurred as McVay turned onto Marsalis from Garza and the racing cars collided and struck two parked cars. The youths were treated and released from Parkland Hospital and later freed on writs of habeas corpus with hearings scheduled.
The Wolters Museum will be open to the public Sunday September 26 from 3 to 5 p.m. If you missed the opening, visit during those hours. The board will meet next week to establish regular hours. Watch the Gazette for announcements.
Gonzales hosts an annual Come and Take It celebration on Saturday October 2 1965 featuring a flower show by the Spade and Trowel Garden Club. The show titled There’s No Place Like Gonzales runs 3 30 to 8 p m at the City Municipal Building with admission 1 00 for adults and 25c for children.
C M Hagan former Yoakum postmaster since 1948 was relieved of duties effective Sept 17 and W J Treptow was named assistant postmaster in charge. The move came as inspector Waseni visited, with Hagan on sick leave and Yoakum operating in temporary quarters on Forest Street near Grand Avenue.
Death came as a tender messenger of relief to Mrs. Mary Albina Novosad of Smithville. She died September 14 1965 at age 86 7 27. Funeral rites were held at Marrs Memorial Chapel September 16 with two ministers officiating and graveside services at Oak Hill Cemetery. She was born January 17 1879 near Wesley and married Joseph H Novosad on November 11 1902. She lived in Ellinger East Bernard Smithville and finally The Towers before death. Survivors include three sons a brother three sisters and multiple grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her husband preceded her in death September 26 1955 and several immediate family members earlier. The article notes her lifelong Brethren Church membership SPJST and Woodmen of the World ties.
The Lavaca County Commissioners Court in Hallettsville on September 14 named Walter T. Buesing as Constable of Precinct 3 to succeed the late Erwin Kasper. Alphonse Stang was named to replace Eddie Chudej in Precinct 2 and the court discussed a plan to address bird damage around the courthouse.

Boy Scout Troop 232 meets Sept 27 at 7 30 p.m. MYF bowling party Sept 26 at 2 p.m. Members may bring guests.

The Shiner Public School PTO plans its second Homecoming weekend on November 5 and 6. A parade Saturday afternoon November 6 invites community participation with plans showing color glamour music and humor. Parade chairmen Mrs Guy McKay and Mrs E W Strathman invite entries of all kinds.

Anton Joseph Florus 59 of Flatonia died at Wagner Memorial hospital in Shiner early Friday September 17 1965 from internal injuries after his pickup struck a stump on his farm near Flatonia. He was a former mail dispatcher at the Flatonia post office and is survived by his wife two sons Leroy and Anthony of Flatonia Ben of Sealy and Donald of San Antonio a daughter Mrs Pauline Farek of Bryan three sisters Sister M Adolphine of Shiner Mrs Agnes Zouzalik of Flatonia and Mrs Katy Fabrygel of Blessing and one brother Joe Florus of Yorktown. Funeral services were held at Sacred Heart Catholic church Flatonia with burial in the Catholic cemetery.
The CYO under Dennis Kutach presents a bake sale on Saturday September 25 starting at 8 30 a m at Patek's Market downtown. Readily available will be pies cakes homemade bread noodles and kolaches for weekend meals.
Peanut growers will observe the latest peanut research at the Peanut Field Day on October 1 at Texas A&M's Plant Disease Laboratory in Yoakum. A 1:30 p.m. tour of trial plots covers weed control planting methods seeding rate chemical tests disease control and production practices. Dr. A L Harrison and Texas A&M Extension staff will answer grower questions after the tour. The event ends about 4 30 p m two miles east of Yoakum on State Highway 111.
