The Texas DPS requires a driver's permit to operate any motor vehicle on public roads. At 14 a permit may be issued for a motor scooter, while all motorcycles follow general rules of cars. Police urge residents to consult Chief Bill Kirk for licensing help amid recent area accidents.
A roundup of local society gatherings and club meetings scheduled for September including AMERICAN Legion sessions on September 22 with post meeting and refreshments, SHINER HD Club on September 17, and various parish and civic group events across Shiner Hallettsville and area.
VFW Post 6209 and Ladies Auxiliary host their annual membership drive at the Post Home on Sunday September 20 1964. The event runs from 1:00 p.m. with supper at 4 p.m. Menu includes heavy beef picnic stew and trimmings. The Toppers provide music for the afternoon and evening. Members and families plus prospective members and friends are invited to attend. A report on the last Post meeting will appear in the Gazette.

Manuel A. Garcia of Shiner's sanitation department asks residents to have trash ready by 6:00 a.m. for residential pickup. Tuesday covers the area south of the railroad tracks and Thursday serves the north side.
Oliver C Doc Burkett died at 4 15 a m Saturday September 12 1964 at Robert B Green Hospital San Antonio after a 12 day stay He was 81 years 6 months 24 days He was buried in Shiner City Cemetery funeral services were held September 13 at Buffington Funeral Home Chapel Rev F E Eilers officiated Pallbearers were Edward Teal Martin Lee Walter Paul Curt Messer Oscar Lichey and George Fiedler He was born February 18 1883 in Dreyer Community, married to Louisa Marburger in 1902, and served as Lavaca County Precinct 3 road commissioner. He is survived by three sons, two daughters, a sister, a brother, ten grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
Clarence Hajek is hospitalized at Methodist Hospital San Antonio after an accident at the Community 6 on Tuesday September 8. He sustained serious hand and arm injuries with skin grafting reported. Cards may be sent to Clarence Hajek c/o Johnnie Hajek 146 Future Dr San Antonio Texas.
Albert J. Benes, long time Shiner resident, died September 12 1964 after a prolonged illness. Born August 12 1882 in Prada Fayette County he was married to Marie Ermis and leaves wife four children two daughters and two sons seven grandchildren and one great grandchild. Funeral services were held at Sts Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church with a Requiem High Mass. He was a retired farmer and a devout Catholic.
SHS junior high science instructor Marvin Jurries at Shiner Public School was inadvertently omitted from last week’s official list and is now recognized.
The Shiner Baptist church will observe Back to School day on Sunday September 20 recognizing students teachers and staff of the local public school. Pastor Rev R A Tindall will deliver a message You Hold Destinies In Your Hand inviting full attendance at Sunday School 9 30 and church services 10 30.
The Shiner Comanche football team will travel to Smiley to play the Smiley Bantams Friday September 18 at 8:00 p.m. A future Nixon game moves to September 25 at Comanche Stadium with reserved and free parking options for fans.
Southwestern Bell announces the 1964 Shiner telephone directories mailed September 1. For the first time the directories include addresses, improving service for Shiner subscribers. Special thanks go to Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Stratman and the City Secretary's office for their help.
Dr C E Strauss son of County Clerk and Mrs Charlie Strauss of Hallettsville passed his medical board examination in June in Fort Worth. A UT Medical School graduate, he is completing an internship at Brackenridge Hospital in Austin.
Shiner friends are reminded the Sweet Home Parish annual Fall picnic is Sunday September 20 with plenty of eats amusements and entertainment on the grounds and a big free dance at night.
Funeral services for John Biehunko Sr. of Route 2 Hallettsville were held September 5 1964 after dying September 3 at Renger Memorial Hospital. Rt. Rev. Msgr. Alois J. Morkovsky officiated at Sacred Heart Church with burial in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Born June 4 1883 in Germany he immigrated in 1901 and farmed in Lavaca County. He married Albina Albrecht. survived by six daughters two sons and many grandchildren. Pallbearers listed.
St Anthony's Catholic Church at Witting will hold a Fall Picnic Sunday September 20 with Holy Masses at 5 30 and 9 00 a m. Family style meals will be served at dinner and supper and attractions will entertain throughout the day. See ad for details.
James Sofka is reported to be improving at Wagner Hospital after a scooter car collision Friday evening. He suffered a compound fracture of the left leg below the knee and a fracture in the left arm.
William M. St. Clair died September 12 1964 at Trinity Lutheran Home Shiner aged 85. Funeral September 14 at Buffington Chapel with Rev Joe Jetton officiating. Interment Ebenezer Cemetery Cheapside. Survived by wife Beulah Langhoff two daughters Margie Wilke and Agon Langhoff son Ira St. Clair four sisters eight grandchildren eight great grandchildren.
The Shiner City Cemetery Association will not hold its annual fall benefit this year and instead requests cash donations to support the cemetery.
Mrs. Marie Gerloff of Shiner died September 9 1964 at age 98 after a long life of faith and family. Funeral services were held at United Dr. Martin Luther Church with graveside rites in Shiner City Cemetery. Survivors include two daughters a son and many grandchildren.
