Driver permits and traffic laws for Texas minors noted

The Texas DPS requires a driver's permit to operate any motor vehicle on public roads. At 14 a permit may be issued for a motor scooter, while all motorcycles follow general rules of cars. Police urge residents to consult Chief Bill Kirk for licensing help amid recent area accidents.

Death of D C Doc Burkett in Shiner Rites Held

Oliver C Doc Burkett died at 4 15 a m Saturday September 12 1964 at Robert B Green Hospital San Antonio after a 12 day stay He was 81 years 6 months 24 days He was buried in Shiner City Cemetery funeral services were held September 13 at Buffington Funeral Home Chapel Rev F E Eilers officiated Pallbearers were Edward Teal Martin Lee Walter Paul Curt Messer Oscar Lichey and George Fiedler He was born February 18 1883 in Dreyer Community, married to Louisa Marburger in 1902, and served as Lavaca County Precinct 3 road commissioner. He is survived by three sons, two daughters, a sister, a brother, ten grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Obituary: Albert J. Benes of Shiner Dies at 82

Albert J. Benes, long time Shiner resident, died September 12 1964 after a prolonged illness. Born August 12 1882 in Prada Fayette County he was married to Marie Ermis and leaves wife four children two daughters and two sons seven grandchildren and one great grandchild. Funeral services were held at Sts Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church with a Requiem High Mass. He was a retired farmer and a devout Catholic.

Funeral services for John Biehunko Sr. of Route 2 Hallettsville were held September 5 1964 after dying September 3 at Renger Memorial Hospital. Rt. Rev. Msgr. Alois J. Morkovsky officiated at Sacred Heart Church with burial in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Born June 4 1883 in Germany he immigrated in 1901 and farmed in Lavaca County. He married Albina Albrecht. survived by six daughters two sons and many grandchildren. Pallbearers listed.

James Sofka Improves After Scooter Car Crash

James Sofka is reported to be improving at Wagner Hospital after a scooter car collision Friday evening. He suffered a compound fracture of the left leg below the knee and a fracture in the left arm.

William M. St. Clair died September 12 1964 at Trinity Lutheran Home Shiner aged 85. Funeral September 14 at Buffington Chapel with Rev Joe Jetton officiating. Interment Ebenezer Cemetery Cheapside. Mrs. Marie Gerloff of Shiner died September 9 1964 at age 98 after a long life of faith and family. Funeral services were held at United Dr. Martin Luther Church with graveside rites in Shiner City Cemetery. Survivors include two daughters a son and many grandchildren.
