Soldier Killed Near Shiner

A 22-year-old Fort Bliss soldier from Port Arthur died after a one car crash near Shiner between San Antonio and Houston. Joseph Jones was fatally injured when his car crashed into a bridge and caught fire, and he died 40 minutes later at a Shiner hospital.

Shiner Public Schools Open With Complete Faculty and Staff

St Michael's Benefit Barbecue Set at Cuero Park

St Michael's Catholic School parent-teacher club will sponsor a barbecued sausage supper at Cuero Municipal Park on Sunday September 13. Proceeds go to defray operational costs with serving starting at 4 30 p m. Entertainment includes a country store and various booths.

Rites Held For James J. Pesek In Sweet Home Community

James Joe Pesek a lifelong Sweet Home resident died September 2 1964 at Renger Memorial Hospital at 76. He married Justina Chaloupka in 1912 and is survived by a son daughters brothers sisters grandchildren and great grandchildren. Benno Holchak Retires From Southern Pacific Railroad

Benno Holchak retired from the Southern Pacific Railroad on Friday August 21 after 49 years of service. He began as clerk-warehouseman at Nordheim in 1915, later served as telegraph operator, relief agent cashier, and was promoted to agent until retirement. He was active in Shiner civic life and helped train several telegraphers. His wife Lunes also retired from her 40 year beauty shop.

Texas vehicle registrations rise 61 percent in decade

The Texas Highway Department reports total motor vehicle registrations increased about 61 percent from 1954 to 1964, led by passenger cars and commercial trucks. Lavaca County rose modestly by 540 units, with commercial vehicles up from 712 to 1,368, while farm truck and passenger car counts fluctuated. Overall state registrations reached 5,632,373 in 1964, up from 3,508,145 ten years earlier.

John J Valis Rites Held for Shiner Resident

John J. Valis 78 died September 2 1964 at Frank Wagner Memorial Hospital after a weeklong illness. Rites held September 4 at Saints Cyril and Methodius Church with Requiem High Mass. Burial in Shiner Catholic Cemetery. He lived in Shiner most of his life worked 60 years in mercantile firms J C Blohm Son and C B Welhausen Co. Survived by wife Elizabeth three sons John W George Louis, daughter Annie Jaehne one brother Joe Valis 14 grandchildren 12 great grandchildren. Family and church members honored his memory with rosaries and closures by Welhausen stores.

Acreage Survey Cards to Be Distributed This September

Postmaster Arthur T. Ward announced Rural Mail Carriers will begin distributing 1964 Acreage Survey Cards to patrons on their routes about September 12. The survey, conducted with help from the Post Office Department and U. S. C. A., collects farmers reports used to estimate Texas crop acreage for 1964. Carriers Gilbert Kasper Route One Edgar P.
