Sociologist Reagan Brown of the Texas Agricultural Extension Service warns that litter costs taxpayers by funding cleanup, flood risk, and property damage. He urges teamwork and citizen crusades to keep streets clean without new laws, proposing a litterbug in every vehicle as a starting point.
A 22-year-old Fort Bliss soldier from Port Arthur died after a one car crash near Shiner between San Antonio and Houston. Joseph Jones was fatally injured when his car crashed into a bridge and caught fire, and he died 40 minutes later at a Shiner hospital.
The 1964 65 term lists a full faculty for Shiner Public Schools. Principal assignments include Melvin E White at Jr High and Max E Seidenberger at Shiner High School. Staff details cover teachers for elementary and secondary grades, auxiliary workers, lunchroom staff, bus drivers, and the secretary to the superintendent.

James Joe Pesek a lifelong Sweet Home resident died September 2 1964 at Renger Memorial Hospital at 76. He married Justina Chaloupka in 1912 and is survived by a son daughters brothers sisters grandchildren and great grandchildren. Funeral services were held September 4 at Kubena Funeral Home and Sacred Heart Church with burial in Sweet Home Catholic Cemetery.
The Rev Elmer Hierholzer District Superintendent of the Methodist Church will visit the Shiner Church Sunday to deliver the morning gospel message at 10 45 a.m. Visitors are invited to attend.
Congressman Clark W Thompson announces the annual competitive examination for 9th District candidates seeking admission to Naval Air Force Military and Merchant Marine Academies. The exam, conducted by the U S Civil Service Commission, will be held October 31 1964 with locations across the district.
Benno Holchak retired from the Southern Pacific Railroad on Friday August 21 after 49 years of service. He began as clerk-warehouseman at Nordheim in 1915, later served as telegraph operator, relief agent cashier, and was promoted to agent until retirement. He was active in Shiner civic life and helped train several telegraphers. His wife Lunes also retired from her 40 year beauty shop.
The Texas Highway Department reports total motor vehicle registrations increased about 61 percent from 1954 to 1964, led by passenger cars and commercial trucks. Lavaca County rose modestly by 540 units, with commercial vehicles up from 712 to 1,368, while farm truck and passenger car counts fluctuated. Overall state registrations reached 5,632,373 in 1964, up from 3,508,145 ten years earlier.
Calvin T. Matthew of Yoakum, district 587 governor, arrived in Shiner to meet Rotarians and discuss membership, district attendance, and service programs. He explained Rotary’s global scope and his role in organizing new clubs while highlighting local and district activities.

John J. Valis 78 died September 2 1964 at Frank Wagner Memorial Hospital after a weeklong illness. Rites held September 4 at Saints Cyril and Methodius Church with Requiem High Mass. Burial in Shiner Catholic Cemetery. He lived in Shiner most of his life worked 60 years in mercantile firms J C Blohm Son and C B Welhausen Co. Survived by wife Elizabeth three sons John W George Louis, daughter Annie Jaehne one brother Joe Valis 14 grandchildren 12 great grandchildren. Family and church members honored his memory with rosaries and closures by Welhausen stores.
Postmaster Arthur T. Ward announced Rural Mail Carriers will begin distributing 1964 Acreage Survey Cards to patrons on their routes about September 12. The survey, conducted with help from the Post Office Department and U. S. C. A., collects farmers reports used to estimate Texas crop acreage for 1964. Carriers Gilbert Kasper Route One Edgar P. Kram Route Two and Thomas B. Hughs Route Three will hand out the cards and urge timely returns.
Residents invited to a Lavaca County Republican Party event in Shiner to hear about candidates. Roy Son of Victoria will show a movie and literature will be available with coffee served. Precinct chair Don Kaspar encourages all in and around Shiner interested in conservative government to attend.
