Farm Bureau Cotton Debate Highlights Cooperative Advantage
In a reply letter the Lavaca County Farm Bureau argues that using two members of the Farm Bureau to claim average prices for 25,000 shipping members with 284,000 bales is unfair. It cites Texas Farm Bureau Cotton Association data showing prices paid above local averages and notes price fluctuations from 30 to 20 cents between August 1924 and September 1924. The letter defends cooperative marketing to prevent dumping, minimize waste, and improve classification and handling while acknowledging farmer profits and the role of middlemen. It questions whether farmers receive fair rewards given capital, labor, and risks, and promotes cooperative marketing as the solution.
