Lutheran Ladies Aid Plans Church Ice Cream Social

The Lutheran Ladies Aid held its September meeting with Rev. Wolfsdorf lecturing on He brews Chapter 11. They announced an ice cream social on September 18 on the church lawn with German and English talks, music by Chas Kasper and his band, and lunch after. Guests included Mrs. Ettlinger, Mrs. French, and Miss Zappe. Next gathering is October 7 at 3 p.m.

Opening of Shiner High School

One of the largest crowds in the High School auditorium welcomed the opening Monday morning. The program featured an orchestra, invocation, a song, an address of welcome by P Rk Otto, a response by Supt. McDonald, a violin solo by Leonita Rich ter with Mrs. Wendtland, and announcements. Faculty assignments include T. H. McDonald as Supt and Social Science, Milton Jowers as Principal, Rosanna Howard English, Ola Garrett Mathematics, Anita Richter Home Economics, R L Hays Commercial and Social Science, Velma Brandes departmental work, M M Wagner English, Melba Welhausen history and geography, Earline Berkenhoff substitute, Evelyn Dreyer 3rd grade, Hertha Liebhafsky 2nd grade and German, Edna Reischl primary.

Kempe Gustwick wedding shocks local readers

Sunday morning announced the marriage of Clarence Kempe of Shiner to Shir ley Gustwick of Yoakum. The ceremony occurred Saturday night at the Presbyterian Manse with Rev. Burk officiating. They will reside in Yoakum where the groom works at the Tannery. Clarence is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Kempe.

96 Year Old Woman Dies in San Antonio

Mrs. Josephine Welhausen aged 96 died at her daughter’s home in San Antonio after living in the United States for 87 years and in San Antonio for 10 years. Funeral services were held, with interment in Flatonia. Survivors include two sons G. A. Welhausen Encinal and R. E. Welhausen Kingsville. five daughters. 16 grandchildren. 17 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

Homemaking Class Reports Achievements At Shiner High

Summer Homemaking class held Achievement Day at Shiner High School with 21 members and visitors attending. Girls presented summer projects across clothing, home improvement, self improvement, and finances, including a display of about eighty garments and a chocolate cake and bran rolls served as refreshments. A mother praised the program as the most beneficial summer her daughter has spent.

Inspectors back Gonzales Eagle Lake highway link

D R Thomas of the Chamber highway department reports progress on State Highway No 200 a direct Gonzales to Eagle Lake route. The road will open fertile lands in Gonzales Lavaca and Colorado counties boosting corn dairy turkey farming and the breeder feeder movement with a one variety cotton idea potentially adapted.

Highway 95 section completed from here to county line

A six and three quarter mile section of Highway No. 95 from here to the Fayette county line, including Oak Hill Cemetery, was completed and accepted by the State Highway Department. This Federal Project, called The Farm to Market highway, cost $29,000 and provided 36,000 man hours at about 35 cents per hour, benefiting Smithville to about $12,000 excluding materials.

New Braunfels Fire Dept Celebrates 50th Anniversary

The New Braunfels Fire Department marked its 50th anniversary on September 6. Charter member O. H. Deutsch of Shiner, one of the few surviving founders, was honored with an invitation and a parade position but could not attend. The department was organized June 6, 1886.
