H G Koether retires after 18 years as postmaster in Shiner praising modernization of the Post Office. The office achieved second class status, with nearly $4000 spent on refurnishings and remodeling. Assistant W W Garbade, also praised, will be missed for courteous service and loyalty to the newspaper and public.
Shiner receives Ed Herder as new postmaster with a long service record from 1897 to 1919. He promotes Mrs Erna Longoria to assistant and names Marie Lahodny as clerk. The new force assumed duty on Sunday September 1.
A big dance at Midway Hall for Beasley School benefits Sunday night September 15 featured Migl's Orchestra for all ages. Admission 35 cents for men, ladies free. refreshments on the grounds. Visitors J. L. Mikulik and wife of San Antonio were Sunday guests.
Distressing Houston report states A J Blohm sustained serious injuries in a Sunday morning auto crash. He was unconscious at Herman hospital after a head on collision near an under pass while driving from Shiner to Houston. Fractured skull and severe cuts followed the impact. relatives rushed to the bedside and later reports indicated condition improved after head surgery.
Mr. and Mrs. R E Tait welcomed a baby girl on August 29. The infant, Harriet Louise, is the former Miss Alice Pohler. Relatives received word Tuesday night of the infant's death, bringing sorrow to the family.
Chas Gebert and wife Louise Heinze and son visited O A Brieger’s home Sunday to see George Gebert whose little son is ill at the local hospital. The Gazette chronicles the death of Le Roy Gebert aged 10 after a ruptured appendix sent him to the local hospital. Le Roy was a half brother of O A Brieger.
J Henkhaus and wife arrived from Houston this past Sunday while Mey erhoff's in Hallettsville unveiled a new display of a beautiful line of ladies' bags attracting shopper interest.
At the Business Men's Club regular meeting at Pohlers Cafe President Paul R. Otto announced year standing committees. Road Committee members include J. C. Blohm G. W. Eschenburg C. J. Waldrep A. Ummelman. Vigilance Committee lists Peck Welhausen Mrs Ella E. Lane and A. H. Kaspar. Highway Beautification includes Dr. A. A. Darilek Arno Wagener and Hugh Koether. Entertainment Committee comprises J. J. Novak Benno Holchak and E. L. Balusek. Community Chest committee to be appointed later.
The pastor Rev Guyon will fill his regular appointment at the Methodist Church next Sunday morning at 11 oclock and in the evening at 8 oclock. The public is cordially invited to worship with this congregation.

Immanuel Lutheran Church holds Sunday school at 9 45 a m. German service follows at 10 30 a m with a business meeting after. Pastor A Bohot invites all to attend.
Public Weigher Roeder reports 1918 bales of cotton received up to Tuesday night September 3. The same date last year saw 3238 bales, indicating a sharp year over year decline in receipts.
Census records show 1 945 bales ginned in Lavaca County for the 1885 crop prior to August 16, versus 4 584 bales by the same date in the previous year. O W Davis and wife spent the weekend with his father in Burnet.
The St Joseph's Society meeting is postponed to Sunday September 22 at 1 30 PM at the Parish Hall. A 42 party lunch will be served and a good speaker will entertain. All members are invited. Ben Huser presides from Shiner St Joseph's Society.
The first regular meeting of St. Ludmila's PTA will be held Monday September 9 at 3 PM in the Academy library. All members are urged to attend and friends of the school are invited. Mrs. Joe Michna, President.
Shiner Chapter No. 272 of the Order of the Eastern Star will join other local chapters in a joint meeting in Weimar on Saturday at 8 o clock to welcome and honor the Grand Matron of Texas. All members able to attend are urged to participate.
The district filled vacancies from resignations at Shiner High School. Miss Eubanks elected last week did not accept. At a later board meeting, Miss Ruby Lee Hulett was elected and Mr A Hays was elected as Commercial Teacher to replace Christian.
Local shop Meyerhoff’s in Hal Letttsville advertises a range of hat styles. Shoppers are invited to browse the collection and select a preferred design. Prices and specific styles are not detailed in the brief notice.
Shiner prepares for its first big Trades Day of the fall season opening Wednesday September 18. Preparations continue for the largest event in the town's history with thousands of page circulars distributed outlining the day's events. Further notice will be given next week.
City Marshal J M Canon Deputy Sheriff Chas Longoria Sheriff A P McElroy and County Attorney Fertsch took up 9 illegal machines in Shiner Wednesday of last week. The marble machines were left as the legality of these still is pending.
The Gonzales American Legion Band will give a free concert Monday night at 8 15 at Welhausen Park. Citizens are urged to turnout in appreciation of this visit from our neighboring city and to enjoy their splendid music.
Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Brosch enjoy a new Shiner home designed in an early American style. The front porch leads to a spacious living room with a wide burning fireplace and arched dining room entry. Blue and pink papering, built in cabinets, tiled bath, and hardwood floors highlight the comfortable residence with modern electrical and plumbing by local tradesmen.
The two reviews of Shiner's new homes note lumber sources. The Den mark home used Garbade Lumber Co materials while the Brosch home utilized Temple and Garbade lumber.
The regular meeting of Shiner Chapter No. 272 is set for Tuesday night September 10. A large attendance of the membership is desired.
St Ludmila’s Academy starts its thirty eighth term on Monday September 9. The Catholic school aims to provide secular instruction and religious training emphasizing character-building, with options in high school subjects nursing preparation and preliminary commercial courses. Sisters guide students toward proficient spiritual and academic duties.
The Lavaca County Free Fair in Hallettsville opens today and runs through Saturday sponsored by the Hallettsville Trades Day Association. The event features a parade on opening day at 11 a.m Firemen's Day on day two and a Kiddie parade on day three with entertainment by Great Southern Shows of Houston and a big rodeo. Preserve officials invite Pres. Bruno Cohn Lecy Eddie Mikulenko to attend.
Miss Alf Christian resigns as commercial instructor at Shiner High School after six years to accept a similar role at Richmond schools. She and her mother, Mrs. Mary Nichols, have made many friends in Shiner and will be missed yet wished happiness in their new surroundings.
High School P T A opens the new term on Thursday September 12 with a large attendance desired from members and new members. Mrs A L Valek is listed as president.
The Chamber of Commerce invites the public to a Thursday meeting to discuss several community projects of great interest. A large attendance is desired. William Jaroszewski serves as president.
