The Shiner community honors Mrs. C. L. Williams on her 100th birthday born May 21, 1854. Her century of service to youth and Shiner High School is celebrated for guiding fourteen girls to completion of high school and five boys to further study and achievement.
A Social Security Office field representative will be at Shiner City Hall from 4:00 to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday May 26 1954 to answer questions about retirement eligibility and survivor benefits for Lavaca County workers and spouses aged 65. Workers must file an application before payments can begin.
A.S.C. reporters are in the field measuring cotton and peanut acreages in Lavaca County. Producers with extra plantings beyond allotted acreage must notify the county ASC office within twenty days and pay a disposal fee of 3.00 per farm plus 1.00 per plot for each excess plot. The operator or representative must show each plot to the reporter during measuring.

Jerry Rebecek a seventh grade 4-H student of St Lud Mila’s won a Sears Roebuck red duroc pig in an Lavaca County 4-H Unit essay contest sponsored by Mr Lindsey. The winning essay titled not Value of Hogs on Our Farm. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Charles Rebecek of Shiner.
The Knights of Columbus announce a high priority meeting tonight Thursday May 20 at 8 00 in the Catholic Parish Gym Election of officers and other matters will be disposed of A social hour follows at Legion Park Refreshments and eats are free to members Bring your own bowl and spoon.
Texas draft authorities plan to deliver ten physicians to military induction in June and July. Brigadier Gen. Wakefield, state director, noted national headquarters issued calls for six doctors in June and four in July with no dentist requests. Since 1950 Texas has had 168 doctor calls and 106 for dentists under the doctors draft.
Lavaca County A. and M. Club held its regular meeting on May 13 to elect officers for the next school year. Elected were President Jimmy Witte, Vice President Quentin Raab, Secretary Buddy Biehunke, Treasurer Jimmy Butschek, Reporter Lawrence Ray Emerson, and Program Chairman Travis Effen berger.
The University of Texas 1954 Summer Session will run from June 7 to August 30 in Austin. Students register on June 7 for first term and the whole session courses, with classes starting June 8. Second term registration is July 19, and classes begin July 20.
Mr and Mrs Walter Ladewig Edna Shiner brother Eugene and wife of Yorktown visited the Henkhauses in New Ulm. Mrs Otto Henkhaus cousin to Walter and Eugene had not seen each other in 46 years. It was a very happy reunion.
Dr Henry A Holle state health officer warns Texans about frequent summer snake bites and outlines first aid. Key steps include limiting poison absorption, applying suction, tourniquet use with careful release, seeking physician help, and avoiding alcohol or home remedies. Also notes Mrs Oran Davis returning from Yoakum Hospital in worsening condition.
Funeral services for Mrs. George Frieda Nollkamper age 70 were announced by Buffington Funeral Home Shiner. The service is today Thursday May 20 at 2:00 p.m. Burial will follow in Shiner City Cemetery.
I E W Hoppe reports Red Cross drive collected 2024 dollars with 139 workers and 899 members and contributors. He thanks county newspapers and all helpers, noting the goal was not quite reached and expressing appreciation for the cooperation and contributions.

Tuesday night May 25 the High School gym hosts a music class recital led by Mrs. Isa bel Thulemeyer. The program begins at eight o'clock and features student performances.
The Methodist and Baptist Churches begin a joint Vacation Bible School on Monday morning June 7 at 8:30. It runs for one week with daily sessions from 8:30 to 11:00. Mrs. E. A. Ross directs and the Rev. J. W. Clanton assists.
District Deputy Grand Master Milton Bressel of Hochheim, 34th Masonic District, Texas, officially visited Shiner Lodge No. 1065 A F and A M on Monday May 17 and delivered an instructive address. The lodge hosted 12 visitors besides home members, followed by a social fellowship after the meeting.
Firemen's Wives Auxiliary will meet Tuesday May 25 at 8 00 p m in City Hall. Cub Scouts Pack 231 meet Thursday May 20 at Legion Park 7 30 p m. Burjes H D Club will not meet as scheduled due to Mrs Geo Nollkam's death but will meet May 28 at 2 00 p m.
The Elementary Grade Department of SLA won a trophy at Field Day in Yoakum on May 5. Schools listed by points: Sacred Heart 153, Hallettsville 108, St. Joseph's Yoakum 89, St. Joseph's Moulton 68. Events included baseball, volleyball, track, and throwball. Individual track winners: First Barbara Patek Jerilyn Kurtz. second Joyce Jaluska Tom Hajek. third Barbara Greive. In a UT news release, Marjorie Brod is named among 14 students awarded bronze for work on the Cactus yearbook. Three students won gold and thirteen earned silver, with Brod noted as placing Shiner among the thirty-two journalism students honored.
