Mrs. C. L. Williams Centennial Birthday Tribute

The Shiner community honors Mrs. C. L. Williams on her 100th birthday born May 21, 1854. Her century of service to youth and Shiner High School is celebrated for guiding fourteen girls to completion of high school and five boys to further study and achievement.

Social Security Rep To Visit Shiner May 26

A Social Security Office field representative will be at Shiner City Hall from 4:00 to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday May 26 1954 to answer questions about retirement eligibility and survivor benefits for Lavaca County workers and spouses aged 65. Workers must file an application before payments can begin.

Cotton Farms Being Measured in Lavaca County

A.S.C. reporters are in the field measuring cotton and peanut acreages in Lavaca County. Producers with extra plantings beyond allotted acreage must notify the county ASC office within twenty days and pay a disposal fee of 3.00 per farm plus 1.00 per plot for each excess plot. The operator or representative must show each plot to the reporter during measuring.

Texas Draft Calls Ten Doctors for Induction

Texas draft authorities plan to deliver ten physicians to military induction in June and July. Brigadier Gen. Wakefield, state director, noted national headquarters issued calls for six doctors in June and four in July with no dentist requests. Since 1950 Texas has had 168 doctor calls and 106 for dentists under the doctors draft.

State University Summer Session Begins June 7 at Austin

The University of Texas 1954 Summer Session will run from June 7 to August 30 in Austin. Students register on June 7 for first term and the whole session courses, with classes starting June 8. Second term registration is July 19, and classes begin July 20.

Cousins Reunite After 46 Years At New Ulm Visit

Mr and Mrs Walter Ladewig Edna Shiner brother Eugene and wife of Yorktown visited the Henkhauses in New Ulm. Mrs Otto Henkhaus cousin to Walter and Eugene had not seen each other in 46 years. It was a very happy reunion.

Red Cross Campaign Totals Declared For County

I E W Hoppe reports Red Cross drive collected 2024 dollars with 139 workers and 899 members and contributors. He thanks county newspapers and all helpers, noting the goal was not quite reached and expressing appreciation for the cooperation and contributions.

Vacation Bible School Opens Jointly June 7

The Methodist and Baptist Churches begin a joint Vacation Bible School on Monday morning June 7 at 8:30. It runs for one week with daily sessions from 8:30 to 11:00. Mrs. E. A. Ross directs and the Rev. J. W. Clanton assists.

Masonic District Deputy Visits Shiner Lodge No 1065

District Deputy Grand Master Milton Bressel of Hochheim, 34th Masonic District, Texas, officially visited Shiner Lodge No. 1065 A F and A M on Monday May 17 and delivered an instructive address. The lodge hosted 12 visitors besides home members, followed by a social fellowship after the meeting.
