About 258 members attended the Shiner Game and Fish Protective League annual meeting held at Rocky Creek on the Welhausen farms. The club highlighted years of creek improvements and welcomed a new disposal plant so Rocky Creek now has pure water. Members celebrated with food as they lauded ongoing efforts to support local fishing and conservation.
Club president Max L. Wolters announced the fish rearing pond is operating again with plans for a new picnic area and a second low water dam. He urged 140 subscriptions to Texas Game & Fish Magazine and reported $439 on hand for project work. The meeting featured remarks by Howard Dodgen on the quail propagation program, with habitat provisions emphasized, and welcomed R E Callender of Texas A and M. Dr L J Peters and others were introduced as speakers and the gathering concluded with film showings.
Charles Kocian Sr aged 74 10 26 died at home in Moulton May 1 after a brief illness. Funeral services May 3 at 8 45 a m at St Joseph Catholic Church with Requiem Mass at 9 00 a m. Interment in Moulton Catholic Cemetery. Rosary May 1 2 at 8 00 p m. Pallbearers include grandsons and nephews. Survived by wife and 12 of 13 children. He was born in Frenstat Czechoslovakia June 5 1879. He and Mary Nesista farmed in Komensky Praha and Moulton. 33 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. Rainfall noted at 2.26 inches with thunder and damage from a tornado wind.
Plans outline the largest Armed Forces Day observance in San Antonio with open house at Randolph Field on May 16, a downtown parade on May 15, and civic luncheons with military speakers. Units from bases and reserves join marching contingents while the Gunter Hotel hosts a civic luncheon on May 14 sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce and Kiwanis Club.
Funeral services for Mrs. Adolph Onken 58 were conducted April 29 at the Luther Evangelical and Reform Church Orange Grove with Rev. C J Freudenberg officiating. She died April 28 at her Orange Grove home, survived by husband two daughters four sisters and four grandchildren. A proposed Shiner elementary school plan with seven classrooms library cafetorium faces May 20 bids and may start project soon on the existing grounds near the high school.
Shiner Gazette earned two certificates of achievement at the Gulf Coast Press Association banquet in Brenham amid 100 plus publishers. Grapeland Messenger and Conroe Courier took first in their contests. Brenham hosted the event with praise for hospitality.
The Eighth Grade graduates stage a three act comedy titled Wild cat Willie in the Doghouse on Monday May 17 at 7 45 p m in the Parish Gym. Everyone is welcome to enjoy the show.
Lavaca County Farm Bureau will hold a county wide Queen Contest in Shiner on June 30 at 8 p.m. Eight community Farm Bureaus enter. Riley Arnold of the American Farm Bureau Federation will give the address and Ray Krenek Orchestra will provide music.
Ed Castello notes in The San Antonio Light that four San Antonians entered Jack Dempsey's bar in New York and ordered Shiner beer from Spoetzl brewery at Shiner Texas. The bartender produced the beer immediately, illustrating Shiner’s worldwide recognition and Dempsey's Bar earning a nod for stocking a Texas brand.
Mrs C W Kram was selected as Mother of the Year by the Council of Catholic Women at Sts Cyril and Methodius parish for 1954. The Kram family includes Edgar of Shiner and Mrs Homer J Argubright of Aqua Dulce, with Charles at home after polio left him disabled before ordination. Previous honorees include Mesdames Kutach Wagner Hubner. The council presented a sterling Rosary and flowers.
Sweet Home Parish prepares a combined 35th anniversary celebration for the blessing of the Church of Our Lady, Queen of Peace on June 3 1919 with a Marian Year pilgrimage on Sunday June 6. Mass at 6 and 9, devotions and Benediction at 4 pm by local priests Marcus Valenta Henry Herbst Justus Hermes, absent Leo Pesek. G Kuratko to preach completing 38th year as pastor and 42nd in priesthood. Parish tomato festival picnic dinner supper bazaar games music all day. Proceeds fund church renovation.
