Commencement Sermon and Graduation Observed by Class of 1920 at Methodist Church

Sunday at 8 oclock Rev A E Rector preached the commencement sermon for the 1920 class at the Methodist Church. Music under Mrs Joe Hughs and violin by Stella Wolters accompanied a choral group with Mrs Plageman and Miss Thulemeyer among the vocalists. Diplomas were presented by T J Ponton as graduates wore white organdy and carried white carnations. Friday at 8:15 the Senior High School play The Dear Boy Graduates will be at the Opera House with admission 25 and 85 cents.

Storm damages Texas rail lines and towns from flooding

Two rail lines the Southern Pacific and San Antonio and Aransas Pass were partly under water in South Texas as torrential rains swelled the Colorado and Guadalupe rivers. A passenger train derailed near Smiths Creek in DeWitt County while bridges washed away and crops suffered thousands in damages across a dozen counties.

Leslie Merrem Captures Public Speaking Honors

Leslie C Merrem won two prizes in public speaking at State University last week representing Bush Literary Society in debate. He led the affirmative on the League of Nations issue, earned the first best speaker prize and a $50 award, with prior training from Shiner High.

Farms Flooded Near Gonzales Texas

Nearly five inches of rain fell in about an hour at Gonzales causing widespread flooding. Wood bridges on public roads washed away and a half mile of track washed out between Gonzales and Shiner. The Guadalupe River rose to thirty three feet and farms in the valley were submerged with extensive crop damage and replanting needed.

Wolters Family Travels to Baltimore for Health Visit

Mr and Mrs Edgar C Wolters and their son Carlton left Tuesday for Baltimore where Mr Wolters will seek treatment at John Hopkins Hospital. The Gazette wishes them a profitable sojourn and a speedy return.

Miss Ella Remmers Withdraws From Normal College

The Gazette reports Miss Ella Remmers has left her term at Southwest Texas Normal, San Marcos due to rheumatism. She travels with her mother Mrs. F Remmers and is now at Kenedy Hot Wells Sanitarium for treatment and rest.

The Parent-Teachers Association announced officers to serve next term. President Mrs E G Buske and Vice President Mrs H H Striebeck will lead, with Secretary Mrs C B Stratman, Assistant Secretary Mrs O C Henkhaus, and Treasurer Mrs Theo Dierkson. Miss Gussie Liebscher, stenographer for Butler Bros in Dallas, Texas, spent part of her vacation in Shiner visiting aunts Mesdames Aug Schramm and C B Strattmann.

Flag Day Observance Planned by Legion Post No 2013

The Kolar Stimulated Post No 2013 American Legion of Honor will celebrate Flag Day June 14 with a patriotic ceremony.
