Senior Voice Recital Honors Rose Gasser From Shin er

Mesdames Mundy and Thutemeyer returned from Cincinnati where Rose Gasser daughter of Mrs Mundy sang at the Senior Voice Recital. Gasser earned the Conservation of Music distinction and will receive a Bachelor of Music degree in June as a dramatic soprano fluent in five languages. She completed four years of study in three years plus a summer, and held the Corinne Moore Lawson scholarship for two years.

Holy Communion Sunday at St Cyril and Methodius Church

A large class of boys and girls received private Holy Communion at the seven o clock Mass. On Sunday May 14 Solemn Communion will be given to a class of children who completed the religion course. At 4 pm the dedication of the Grotto will take place.

Banquet at St. Ludmila’s Academy Honors Graduates

Sixty places were set for the St. Ludmila’s Academy Junior-Senior Banquet held on Tuesday evening on the south basement porch decorated with gladiola. Rt. Rev. Msgr. L. P. Netardus offered a timely admonition, followed by Mrs. Lane’s closing message and a poem about deeds and sincerity.

The Welhausen Dam event drew about 800 members for a social evening with Wieners and cold beer. President Mayor Richter opened the meeting and new officers were elected: President Mayor Richter, Vice-President C. J. Garbade, Secretary-Treasurer Edwin Wolters. Memorial services honored deceased members W. J. Tomasco and Wm Reichardt Jr., charter members and Tomasco the founder. Recital of Mrs Lane Expression Class Delights City Auditorium

A receptive audience enjoyed the monthly recital at the City Auditorium featuring Mrs Lane's Expression Class. Pupils performed well with readings set to music and stage decorations praised. Guest entertainers were the Strauss sisters Eloie Marie Marjorie Ann and Helen Agnes of Talletteville, ages 6 4 and 2, who received applause and won a prize at Hallettsville.

About 100 business and professional leaders from 20 southeast Texas cities urged Gov. O Daniel to appoint George P Barron of Yoakum as chairman of the state highway commission. Barron, superintendent of Yoakum schools, was endorsed after declining a secretary to the governor offer.

Mrs Emilie Pelucha Dies at 76 in Texas Home

Mrs Emilie Pelucha aged 76 died Thursday morning at her Henkhaus home. The funeral was Saturday from the family home with services at Moulton Catholic Church and burial at Moulton Catholic Cemetery. Born in Hermanice Czechoslovakia she came to Texas in 1882 and was twice married Darilek and Pelucha. Survived by husband John Pelucha three daughters three sons a brother and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Shiner Men Host German Program and Athletics Night

Business Men's Club dinner honors Shiner High School athletes. Friday May 12 german program in new auditorium gym with three one act plays Tante Mueller Kommt Bei den Groszeltern and Ue bung macht den Meister. A 40 member chorus and grade choral numbers accompany performances. The event features Supt McDonald Coach Milton Jowers captains Bennie Patek and William Novak plus many local figures and a large crowd. The meeting celebrates Shiner High School sports and district championship with praise for the team and coach Jowers.

Dr. J. W. Burns Dies at Cuero Pioneer Surgeon Passes Away

Dr. J. W. Burns, 72, Cuero pioneer physician and surgeon, died Sunday night after a short illness. A Tennessee 1892 graduate, he built Burns Hospital over 36 years ago and led active service until his death. He chaired Yoakum Commandry and held Texas Medical Association roles, with funeral held Tuesday in Cuero.

Shiner Fishermen Land Red Fish in Guadalupe River

L E Denmark A H Kasper Victor Stindt Dr Darilek and wives fished for catfish on the Guadalupe river near Cuero. They hauled a trotline catch weighing four to five pounds about 20 inches long. Dr Dari lek tentatively called it a redfish, later identified by John Valenta as red. Peck Welhausen sent the tale from Shiner. The locals may back the claim with cash, per the Houston Post.

Dedication Dance Held Saturday A Success in Shiner

A large South Texas crowd attended the Dedication Dance in Shiner praising the new gymnasium. The maple floor impressed guests as the event yielded about $70 profit for the School Board. The board plans occasional dances to cover costs but aims not to compete with local promoters. The crowd behaved admirably and left satisfied with a fine spring event.

Miss Sherill Sanders became the bride of George Cimrhanzel at First Annunciation Church in Houston on Monday April 24 at 10:00 a m Rev Lane officiated. The couple, from prominent families, will reside in Houston after a honeymoon to Shiner both working at the Old Vienna and were seen off by relatives.

Last Wednesday evening April 19 the second year Home Economics group with teacher Miss Staples entertained Shin er High School trustees at a dinner. Host Mr McDonald guest Mr Jowers hostess Miss Ethel Baros waitresses Misses Carolyn Valenta Alma Ray. Menu included baked chicken mashed potatoes creamed peas hot biscuits salad butter iced tea mint lemon ice cream angel food cake. Mr Hollmann spoke wishing the girls success in future home making problems.

Cuero Turkey Trotters behind Arnold Martinek beat league leaders Shiner 8 to 5 before a large crowd, pulling Cuero into a first place tie with Victoria Rosebuds in the Gulf Coast League. Martinek pitched effectively and led Cuero with four hits, while Speckles drove in six runs for Cuero and Jowers added three RBIs for Shiner.

Opening of Sulphur Park Swimming Pool

A big celebration marked the opening of the Sulphur Park Swimming Pool last Sunday. Barbecue and refreshments were served on the grounds. Patek's Band furnished music during the day and for the dance at night. In the afternoon, Moulton and Sweet Home crossed bats, the score resulting 7 to 3 in favor of Sweet Home.
