Early Christians celebrated Easter with an eight day period of thanks giving and communal rites. The column reflects on memory, worry, and ambition, urging daily hard tasks, and cites Daniel Webster's painted cattle as a humorous example.
Emily Hohlt 83 died March 15 1967 in Frank Wagner Memorial Hospital after a illness she had suffered since March 11. She lived in Shiner Robstown and Hallettsville before moving to United Dr Martin Luther Church. She is survived by sister Sophia Hohlt and three nephews and two nieces. Funeral services were held March 16 at United Dr Martin Luther Church with Rev F E Eilers officiating. Burial followed in Shiner City Cemetery.
Flatonia High School Future Farmers of America members stage the Fat Stock Show at Flatonia Livestock Commission Company Auction Barn on March 30. Livestock stays on exhibit all day with a 1:00 p.m. parade, judging to follow, premium sale at 8:00 p.m. Breeding Swine and Dairy Show begin at 9:30 a.m. at the Flatonia Roping Arena. Judges include two Texas A and M Senior Livestock Judging Team members. poultry judged by a leading poultry expert. Open to the public to view results of the year’s work.
Obituary notes a sister, Mrs. Al G Edna Phillip of San Benito Texas, hidden in the survivors list for Dr. Joseph Harper in last week Gazette. The omission was unintentional and later corrected.
Mrs Adolph Rebecek 74 7 20 of Flatonia died March 17 1967 after a year long illness. Funeral at Smith Funeral Home Flatonia then Sacred Heart Church with Rev Allen M Black. Burial in Flatonia Catholic Cemetery. Survivors include husband five children and many relatives. Rosary Friday night at the funeral home.
The Sophomore Class of Shiner High School will hold a car wash on Saturday March 25 with sessions from 8 to 12 and 1 to 3. Fees are $1.00 for cars and pickups and $1.25 for station wagons. Call LY 4 2387 for appointments.
Shiner stores will close at noon Friday March 24 for Good Friday and stay closed the rest of the day per Chamber of Commerce. Local grocers advertise specials Thursday to Saturday and churches urge attendance. The Shiner Gazette and Raymond's Auto Supply will observe early closures. First National Bank will close Good Friday afternoon.

Funeral from Buffington Funeral Home Shiner March 18 1967 at 2 45 p.m. Requiem Mass 3 p.m. at Shiner Catholic Church. Rosary March 17 1967 at 8 p.m. Burial in Shiner Catholic Cemetery with military honors.
St Paul High School announces its annual Junior-Senior Prom set for Monday March 27 starting at 8 00 p m The public can view the decorations Monday from 5 00 to 6 30 p m After 6 30 p m only invited guests will be admitted to the gym
A tornado and hail hit Shiner around 6 30 p m causing major damage. A 75 foot steel smokestack toppled and hung over the Spoetzl Brewery. A nearby cotton storage building lost its roof and a TV antenna blew down. Rain totals included 1 40 inches that day and 3 60 inches for the six month period.
Hospital visiting hours are 10 00 to 11 00 a m 2 00 to 4 00 p m and 7 00 to 8 30 p m. Patients listed this week include Mrs Joe Drabek Mrs Emma Krause Mrs Ida Bednar Kelly Don Minear Edwin Pavlicek Robert Dreyer and others. Dismissed patients include Kenneth Tronicek Edwin Schoenweitz John Machacek Mrs Adolphine Frers Frank Darilek Joe Olbrich Willie Wegener and others.
The American Legion and Auxiliary in Texas join a state wide birthday observance on March 28 with a TELETHON held March 18 at Department Headquarters in Austin to celebrate the Legion's 48th anniversary. Founding dates and multi generation veteran members highlighted 1919 Paris origin and wars including WWI II Korea and Vietnam. District and Division commanders support the celebration across the state.
The Shiner Public Schools request spring donations of boys and girls clothing and shoes to aid local students. Bags or cartons should be packed and pickup arranged through Mrs. Zander or Mrs. Kasper. Minor repairs will be made before distribution.
Robert P. Griffiths Sr. 75 of Houston died March 20 1967 after a Houston hospital stay. Services were at Saint Pauls Episcopal Church March 22 with Rev. S George Parrigin. interment Forrest Park Lawndale Cemetery. Survivors include wife Annie Lou Griffiths son Robert P Griffiths Jr sister Olive Hall three grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Ben G Braden is recovering satisfactorily from major surgery at Baptist Memorial Hospital in San Antonio performed on Saturday March 18 1967. His son Clarence visited and reports his father in good spirits, with wife Mrs Braden at his bedside. If no complications develop he will stay 10 to 12 days in hospital and then recuperate at his daughter Mrs Walter J DeHarde’s home at 3831 Nash Blvd San Antonio.
Shiner Catholic Church outlines Holy Week activities with Holy Thursday Mass at 7:30 p.m. and Communion, processions, and public adoration. Good Friday includes Stations of the Cross at 2:00 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. services, Easter Vigil 7:30 a.m., and Easter Sunday masses at 6:30, 8:00, and 9:30 a.m. The 9:30 a.m. Mass honors service members from Shiner and the area through the Catholic Daughters.
Shiner Methodist Church lists mid week Lent service at 7 30 p m and Good Friday 3 00 p m with Holy Communion. Easter Sunday worship at 10 45 a m and Sunday School at 9 30 a m. United Dr Martin Luther Church announces Maundy Thursday 7 30 p m worship with Holy Communion and Good Friday 2 00 p m union service. Easter Day services at 9 30 a m and 10 15 a m with readings. Additional LCW and LCM meeting at 7 30 p m Monday and Confirmation instruction at 4 15 p m Thursday led by Pastor F E Eilers.
Lavaca County chairmen John Lindsey and Judge Strauss announce a Governor-for-a-Day celebration in Austin with thousands from the 18th Senatorial District attending the inauguration of acting Governor William N. Patman. Tours view historical documents from Washington-on-the-Brazos and a banquet at the Commodore Perry Hotel ends the day.

Peterek of Yoakum were held March 9 1967 at Buffington Chapel and St Josephs Catholic Church with Father Patrick Breen officiating Interment was in Shiner Catholic Cemetery He died March 8 1967 in Huth Memorial Hospital Yoakum at age 76 years 1 month and 16 days Born February 2 1891 in Jackson County Texas he married Agnes Pekar in 1912 They lived in Dilworth and later Yoakum Surviving are his wife Agnes a son Ignace Jr a daughter Agnes Vaclavik ten grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren plus siblings and other relatives.

The Shiner Business Men's Club will meet on Thursday March 30 replacing March 23 due to Holy Week services. Members are reminded of the change. John O. Cook and Dr A A Darilek Sr. serve on the food committee.
The youth groups from Baptist, Lutheran and Methodist churches plan an Easter sunrise service at 6:00 a.m. Sunday, March 26 at Comanche Stadium with a rain plan in the Methodist Church. Public invited.
Filing for mayor is Ben Marcak who serves as alderman and announced for the post vacated by Mayor Kaspar. Marcak and James F. Buske face term expirations while Bennie Simper files for alderman replacing Marcak and Buske. The ballot lists mayor and two aldermen.
The Shiner Independent School District schedules a Saturday election on April 1 to elect two trustees. Incumbents Kenneth Otto and Richard Williford seek re-election as polls open 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Shiner City Hall. Citizens are urged to support the candidates.
Misses Linda Cimrhantel and Joan Petru announce the Jo-Lynn Beauty Den opening beside Post Cafe. An Open House is scheduled Thursday March 23 from 8 00 a m to 2 00 p m with free door prize registration. Call LY 4 3823 for appointments.
