A church season message urges stronger attendance and service. It notes members invite others to pews, with some bringing many guests, and advocates tithing time and talents to support church and community causes. It calls all to fulfill vows to attend services at their chosen church.
Guadalupe Valley Electric Co op of Gonzales Texas won first prize in a nationwide Power Use Contest by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association. GVEC received a 250 prize and trophy from O W Davis at the NRCA meeting in St Louis on February 25 1960.
The CCC announced minimum sales prices for upland cotton for the 1960-61 marketing year. Prices vary by source, with 110 percent of the Choice B loan rate for local sales and higher of market price or 110 percent of the loan rate for New Orleans office sales. Carrying charges rise from October 1960 to July 1961.
Founders Day set for Thursday March 10. A note to parents about Little League participation for boys ages 9 to 12 and questions about activities for younger boys and girls as the local recreation program expands.
Parents urged to attend a 7 30 p m Thursday session in the Cafeteria to hear ideas on recreational activities. The meeting aims to show men in the organization must take part and honor the founders of the local PTA, with refreshments served after the discussion.
Funeral services were held at Buffington Funeral Home chapel Shiner on Saturday March 5 1960 for Mrs Helen Boehl 85 of Rt 1 Moulton with Rev H E Fehler officiating. She died March 3 1960 at her daughter's home in Moulton. Interment was in Weimar City Cemetery. Pallbearers were her grandsons. Survivors include two sons two daughters ten grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
Mrs. James Harper 79 of Menard County died February 23 1960 at her ranch home west of Menard Funeral services were held February 26 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church Menard with burial at Rest Haven Cemetery under Mission Funeral Home Father Cartier officiating She was born April 3 1880 in Parker County and married James Harper June 7 1906 in Mason Survived by husband one daughter three sons one sister one brother and nine grandchildren
Fritz Hugo Ebert died March 1 1960 in Houston at age 55 after a cancer battle. Funeral services were held March 3 1960 at 3 p.m. at Buffington Funeral Home Shiner with burial in Shiner City Cemetery. Survivors include his wife Hertha Hoerig, son Walter Ebert and two grandchildren. He had owned Fritzs Place and was a member of United Dr. Martin Luther Church.
The Shiner Clippers baseball meeting is set for Friday March 11 1960 at 7 30 p m at City Hall. All new and old players fans and anyone interested are urged to attend.
Funeral services held March 4 at United Dr. Martin Luther Church for Alma Wehmann age 73 of Shiner following a Thursday morning heart failure at her home. She was active in the Lutheran Church with four children and eight grandchildren surviving. Burial in Shiner City Cemetery.
The filing period ended last Saturday with two incumbents, Aldermen Ray Welhausen and August H. Maneth, filing for re election. No other candidates filed for the two alderman seats. The City Council is praised for its continued work and service to the city.
Three candidates appear for the Shiner Independent School trustee election on April 2 1960. Incumbent George Griffin seeks re election, while Henry Fietsam and G D Nollkamper are new candidates for the second seat. John O Cook declines renomination.
The U S Department of Agriculture set minimum sales prices for 1959 and earlier upland cotton at the higher of the market price as CCC determines or 115 percent of the Choice B loan rate for the 1960 61 marketing year. A separate schedule for discounts on sales begins October with 10 points and rises to 190 by July.
Funeral rites for John Kalivoda were held in Shiner on March 7 1960 at Buffington Funeral Home and Shiner Catholic Church. He died March 4 1960 at age 78 and is survived by three daughters ten grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Col Homer Garrison Jr director of the Texas Department of Public Safety said more than two million motor vehicles remain to be inspected before the April 15 deadline. He noted that about half of the projected 4 300 000 will have been inspected so far and urged motorists to visit inspection stations early before lines grow long.
The Shiner Volunteer Fire Department fought a fire at Clarence Brown’s northern Shiner home Friday at 9 p m caused by a faulty kerosene stove. Extensive damage to the frame house and its contents was estimated over 1 000 dollars. Firemen responded again at 11 p m when bedding reignited. Clarence Brown reportedly overturned his car in front of the home in the confusion. The residence was owned by Mrs Hurley Parker. Fire Marshal Bennie Marak urged kerosene stove checks as a major local fire risk and warned about hazards from live wires and obstructed fire apparatus access. The notice cites Uniform Traffic Law Sections 100 and 101 prohibiting following fire apparatus within 500 feet and driving over unprotected fire hoses. Violations carry fines up to 200 dollars and future prosecutions. Public safety officials urge compliance during fire alarms and operations.

A planning meeting for a drapery workshop will be held in the county court room Hallettsville on Monday March 14 at 2 30 p m for all women interested in attending.
Funeral services for William A French are set for 2:00 p.m. Thursday March 10 at Buffington Funeral Home Shiner and continue at United Dr Martin Luther Church Interment will follow at Shiner City Cemetery French died at home on Tuesday March 8 1960 Survivors include his wife Melba Behlen and sister Mabel French Local businesses will close during the 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. services.
The Shiner Rotary Club held its weekly noon meeting at Swank Restaurant with President Clyde Otto presiding. The nominating committee proposed officers for 1960 1961 including Rev. John Gilbert as President and Harvey Barsch as Secretary, plus a board of directors and the new slate was accepted.
