Texas will supply 270 men to the national April draft quota of 6,000 for the Army. Colonel Morris S. Schwartz, state Selective Service director, announced pre-induction physical and mental exams for about 550 men in April. Local boards have completed their April quotas, which target draftees aged at least 22 on April 1, 1960, except volunteers or delinquents who may be younger.

Robert Foley a 16 year old Negro youth from Shiner was jailed in Hallettsville after confessing to robbing the Shiner Colored School Thursday night. Police chief Charlie Frazer led the investigation aided by the Hallettsville sheriff who transferred Foley to the county jail. stolen items included two cases of chocolate milk cookies and about 20 dollars in cash.

Born near Praha in Fayette County on April 22, 1886, he worked in the gin and oil mill business and was active in his own oil mill at death. William A. French Lauded Shiner Citizen Passes at 80
William Alfred French died March 8 1960 at his family home after a heart attack aged about 72. He owned French's Variety Store and served as Shiner Chamber of Commerce director and Shiner Business Men's Club president.
