Adolf Sembera, recent accident victim, moved from Santa Rosa Hospital in San Antonio to Dr. Frank Wagner Memorial Hospital in Shiner for further convalescence. Although critically injured, he is slightly improved at present.
Louis Zinke, 61, of Route 2 Shiner, operating a 200 acre Dreyer area spread won the DeWitt Soil Conservation District’s Outstanding Conservation Farmer of the year. The award highlights his machine shop on site with capabilities to build or repair various farm machinery and his extensive machinery modification and repair work for district equipment and neighbors.

J M Canon of Shiner marked his ninety first birthday on Sunday as his son Roy remained seriously ill in an Austin hospital. Relatives visiting included R H Canon and Bruce Canon of Liberty Hill, Bud Brittain of Milwaukee, Wallie Perez of San Antonio, Ruth and Ed Barnes and Brett Barnes of Houston, and others.
Frank Cunda, 85, died in a house fire on Tuesday evening February 28, 1961, near Velehrad north of Hallettsville between St John and Praha. He likely fell into the flames while trying to fight the fire after sparks from his pipe set a hay stack alight. His wife, an invalid, and two daughters plus a son survive. Funeral services were held at Praha Catholic Church with interment in Praha Cemetery. Fayette County Sheriff's Office investigated.
The Shiner Brethren Church announces a cemetery cleaning starting 8:00 a.m. Saturday March 12. Members with relatives buried there are urged to participate or donate if unable to attend, with funds sent to Mrs. F. C. Malina in Shiner Texas or left at First National Bank.

Congratulations to Mr and Mrs Elvin E Brom of Gonzales on the birth of a daughter at Dr Frank Wagner Memorial Hospital on March 1 weighing six pounds and some ounces. Mr and Mrs Jim Kubicek Jr of Moulton welcomed a daughter at the same hospital on March 2 weighing six pounds 11 ounces.
The Wesley Bible Class of Shiner Methodist Church reported sending 10 dollars cash and clothing to the Svetlik family after a fire that destroyed all belongings. Other area organizations contributed, with further donations requested via the Gazette Office.
The Shiner Clipper baseball team schedules a 3:00 p.m. Sunday tryout at Clipper Field. All prospective players should attend. Season tickets for the 1961 campaign are $2.50 each, covering seven home games and saving $1.00 per ticket.
Joe E. Pulkrabek of Austin died February 24 1961 at age 61. He owned Jack and Jill in north Austin with his family. He is survived by wife Nelda two children Joe Jr Gaynell and Marline Hamilton of Alaska two brothers Frank and Charlie both of Yoakum three sisters Bessie Chuder Annie Berkowsky and Emma McMaster. Funeral services were held February 27 in Austin.
The Future Homemakers of America of Shiner High School will stage a Kidnap Day on Saturday March 18 with two sessions. FHA girls will kidnap local business people, transport them to the FHA Cottage for coffee and a donation, then return them, with cars and participants marked as kidnap car. The event funds FHA activities.
A Lavaca County feed grain survey starts soon to collect acreage histories for corn sorghum barley and oats from all farms producing feed grains in 1959 or 1960. County Ag Stabilization and Conservation officials urge farmers to attend March 9 or 10 meetings to provide data for possible 1961 base acreages and program adjustments.
The Trinity Lutheran Home campaign in Shiner began February 24 and shows cash and pledge receipts totaling 6752.00. A final report meeting is set for March 8 after the Lenten service, with all solicitors urged to attend to finalize total receipts. a large gift toward the home for the aged remains noted as received earlier.
The Department of Agriculture orders a survey on all farms growing corn grain sorghum and other feed grains with reports due March 16 1961. County representatives will collect data at designated community sites from March 9 to 10 including Moulton Moravia Sweet Home Hallettsville Shiner Vienna Hope and others. Farmers should bring farm numbers and acreage for corn grain sorghum and all crops plus idle land. those away from designated sites may visit the County Office by March 16. The survey accompanies proposed feed grain legislation offering payments for a 20 percent shift to soil conserving use and potential price supports. cooperation is urged.
The younger set will be delighted Saturday night March 11 at 7 30 p m as Shiner High School Gym presents The Wedding of Tom Thumb. Mrs Otto Gloor s Kindergarten class participates with names listed for roles. Proceeds fund kindergarten supplies with intermission music and ceremonies by Mrs Gloor Suzanne Riske Jo Ann Henkhaus.

Hallettsville Livestock Commission sold 890 cattle 440 hogs and 35 sheep at a Tuesday auction. Prices ranged from calves good and choice 25 to 33 and hogs good and choice 17.60 to 18.50 with various weights and classes listed for cows calves and sheep.
