The Grand Theatre in Yoakum begins screening The Alamo starting Thursday March 2 with Texas Independence Day. Box office opens at 1 45 PM and show times are 2 12 PM 5 16 PM and 8 20 PM. The film covers the battle of the Alamo and is noted as a Texas made production.
A Lavaca County family of fourteen was left homeless after a Thursday evening fire in the Witting area. No injuries were reported and the cause is under investigation.
Funeral services were held March 1 1961 at United Dr. Martin Luther Church for Minnie Glatzert 88 born October 9 1872 in Westphalia Germany who died February 27 1961 in Shiner Texas after a lingering illness. Interment followed at Shiner City Cemetery. Survivors include five children ten grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.

The photographer Christopher Havel offers scenes from German towns many rebuilt and not destroyed battle sites cemeteries in St Avold and Luxemburg cities Paris London Buckingham Palace guards and Brussels Holland and Berlin two zones. Narration will be mostly via tape with equipment handling by staff.
Scout Troop 232 of Shiner sponsored by Knights of Columbus plans a booth at Scout-O-Rama in Austin March 17 18. About 120 booths will showcase scouts including ticket sales with commissions and prizes for selling 10 to 130 tickets.

Publishers announce that effective March 1 1961 single copies of the Shiner Gazette will cost 10 cents, up from 8 cents. Yearly subscriptions remain at 2 dollars 50 cents. They urge regular buyers of singles to switch to a subscription to save.
Mrs Lena Wanek died in her sleep February 15 1961 at a Prague Oklahoma rest home She was 81 born in Texas lived in Oklahoma since 1953 and was a Catholic Funeral was February 18 at the Shrine of the Infant Jesus of Prague with Rev S H Kleman officiating Burial followed at the Catholic Cemetery Survived by a brother Albert Benes Shiner a sister Mrs Frank Matula Runge and 24 nephews and nieces Preceded in death by her parents Joseph and Terezie Benes and four sisters Pallbearers were John Bartos Frank Mizera Leo Moore Floyd Riddle Martin Cufal and Frank Jezek.
The Girls Athletic Association of Gonzales High invites all to the annual tournament March 2 and 3 at the Gonzales High Gym. Games at 4 and 8 p.m. on both days with the championship at 8 p.m. Friday. Admission 35 cents for adults and students.

John J. Grandin of New York was found dead in his locked car at a Wied roadside park near Victoria after an autopsy in Victoria. Pathologist ruled death by carbon monoxide and asphyxiation from carbon dioxide, suspecting sleepiness led to a nap stop. Grandin’s car belonged to Executive Car Leasing Co of Florida and was en route Cocoa Florida to Southgate California. He was identified by papers on his person. a brother, Robert Grandin of Hialeah Florida, survived.
Shiner High School girls basketball ends district play with a 5–3 record and second place. Annabell Seifert led scoring in several games with 12 points in the Bastrop win, while Mildred Welhausen tallied 25 against Smithville and 15 against Bastrop. The team, coached by Betsy Ross, features captains Elsie Vaclavik and Welhausen and earned second district honors for Doris Grossman and Welhausen.
The Shiner Public School Elementary invites the public to an Open House on March 7 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Displays of children's work and art will give insight into their school life and learning.
Shiner Public School Elementary Student Council hosts a stew supper on March 7 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Mothers will bring homemade pie and bread. Admission costs 65 cents for adults and 35 cents for children up to the 6th grade.
