County confirms a screwworm on a ranch seven miles south of Gonzales on Friday June 24. County Agent Frank Stockton urges farmers to watch for symptoms and submit samples. Past outbreaks have caused heavy livestock losses before eradication efforts began years ago.
Funeral services for Fred G. Menke a prominent Denhawken farmer and rancher were held at 2 30 p m on Father's Day June 19 1966 at Finch Funeral Home Chapel Nixon Ministers were A C Strong and Wilfred R Menke nephews served as pallbearers. He died June 17 1966 at Nixon Nursing Home born May 27 1891 in Linden He married Minnie Nolte and had two daughters and two sons in law Survivors include wife two daughters two sons in law grandchildren sisters and a brother The family joined in baptism and confirmation rites in Lutheran churches.
A senior lifesaving course will be taught at the Veterans Memorial Pool in Wolters Park Schulenburg from July 11 to July 15 with a $1.50 pool charge. Junior lifesaving is a prerequisite. The Lavaca County Farm Bureau Queen's contest will be held Tuesday July 19 at the Hope Community Center in Hope at 8 00 p m. Eligibility age is 16 22 by September 1. Interested entrants should notify the Farm Bureau Office in Hallettsville or any Community Secretary.
William Kirk Shiner chief of police led an investigation after a 1953 Ford was stolen from Shiner on June 19. Five local youths in a red 1962 Chevrolet were identified. James Earl Demps 18 was taken into custody in Austin and charged as the driver. The car was found in a body shop in drying paint. a Lavaca County felony auto theft warrant was issued.
The 68th Catholic State League Convention gathers July 8–11 in New Braunfels hosted by SS Peter and Paul Parish. Delegates will hear from Louis Leman and Dr Robert E Brierly, with a Pontifical Mass by Bishop Tschoepe and Abbot Hoenig. The Men’s Society marks its 75th anniversary.
Alvin Bee Bednar died in his sleep at 10 p m Sunday June 26 1966 after a long illness He was born March 29 1913 in Shelby Texas and lived in Shiner about fifty years He is survived by his wife Joyce Bednar and son Jonnie Bee Bednar Funeral services were held at Buffington Funeral Home Chapel Shiner and burial followed in Shiner City Cemetery He had worked at Spoetzl Brewery Tex Tan Southern Pacific and in the family furniture business and served as a civil defense employee during World War II
Funeral services for Mrs Josephine Stubar Ray were held at Buffington Funeral Home Shiner then Sacred Heart Catholic Church Hallettsville for a Requiem Mass on Friday June 17 1966. The Rev Father John Orr of Hallettsville officiated the service.
Burglars raided the rear shop area of Yoakum Grain Inc on West Gonzales Street Friday night June 17 stealing over 1500 dollars worth of equipment and appliances. Police and sheriff patrols followed clues Saturday morning.
Funeral services were held in Baytown on Tuesday May 31 1966 for John Emmette Smith age 35 and his wife Barbara Maxine Smith of Austin who died in a May 28 car crash on Loop 111. Also killed was their child or children and a Renault driver Windy L Williams. The Smiths were en route to Corpus Christi when their 1965 Volkswagen collided head on with Williams 20. Williams was the daughter of a Bergstrom Air Force Base deputy commander. The Smith children were injured and hospitalized. John Emmette Smith served as a captain in the Air Force during the Korean War and worked as a service installation engineer for Texas Nuclear Corporation. Barbara Smith was born January 27 1934 in Baytown. Surviving relatives include both families and several Baytown Shiner Gonzales and Houston attendees at the services.
Joe B. Day 57 years 4 months 27 days died at 2 10 p m Friday June 17 1966 in Houston Veterans Hospital after a long illness. He was born January 20 1909 near Cuero native of the area son of John W Day and Carrie Lucas Day a World War II veteran and resident of 3602 Blance Courts. He worked for E L Caldwell Co.
The Lutheran Ladies Aid sponsors a social on Thursday, June 30 at 7 p.m. Proceeds from a free will offering fund choir robes. Public is invited to enjoy an evening of fellowship.

Otto Joseph Krametbauer of Gonzales died June 9 1966 at Holmes Memorial Hospital at 3 15 pm He was 44 born March 19 1922 in Moulton He served as a sergeant in World War II and worked for Frito Lay He is survived by his wife two sons five brothers three sisters and several half siblings The service was held in Gonzales with burial in Schulenburg City Cemetery
The Shiner Jr Hermann Sons Chapter will host a bake sale in front of the First National Bank on Saturday July 2 starting at 8:00 am. Homemade items will be sold and donations are appreciated.
Rudolph Henry Zacharias a 59 year old Port Lavaca businessman died June 20 1966 after an extended illness. Funeral held June 22 at First Presbyterian Church Port Lavaca with Rev Leonard Swinney officiating. Burial in Port Lavaca Cemetery. Survived by wife Marie two sons Paul Ray and Rudy Jr two brothers Harry and Elo and several grandchildren.
