Institute Of Texan Cultures To Tell German Czech Settler Story

The Institute Of Texan Cultures under construction for HemisFair 68 will present Texas history through the stories of its 25 nationalities including German and Czechoslovak groups. A three story facility on 13% acre lot will house exhibits, research, educational TV, and classroom materials.

KJZT Moves Executive Office to Austin

The KJZT Executive Board, meeting in Granger on June 21, voted to establish a separate Executive Office in Austin to modernize and speed the organization’s operations. The Home Office remains in Granger under Mrs. Benita Pavlu. The Texas Czech Catholic Women of Texas now number over 20,000 members with $17 million in insurance and about $7 million in assets as they expand beyond rural roots.

Grand Jury Recalled to Study Lavaca Co Crimes

District Judge Paul C. Boethel orders Lavaca County grand jury to reconvene June 29 to review crimes since April. Included is the May 16 slaying of George Chudej, with Ernest E. Chaloupka charged and out on a $10,000 bond. Courts are on summer vacation in July and August, delaying any trials until September.

Rites Held for Mrs. Joe Najvar in Gonzales

Funeral services for Mrs. Annie Najvar 55 were held Monday June 26 at St. James Catholic Church Gonzales with burial in the church cemetery. She died June 24 after a lengthy life as a teacher and former Gonzales Classroom Teachers Association president. She held degrees from Our Lady of the Lake and Southwest Texas State College. Survivors include her husband Joe L. Najvar, two sons Lawrence and Michael, her mother Agnes Janak, five sisters, four brothers, and several relatives.

Joseph Welfel 1901 1967 Rites Held In Shiner

Joseph Welfel aged 80 years died Friday June 23 1967 at the Bay City home of his son. Funeral 9 30 a m Monday at Buffington Funeral Home Shiner with Rev Charles Carolan officiating burial in S P I S T Cemetery pallbearers named Melvin Gavender Bill Densford Preston Ward Eugene Freddie and Dennis Welfel. He was born February 14 1887 in Novohrad Lavaca County to Jacob and Barbara Sebera Welfel and came to Texas with his family in 1886 from Netolice Czechoslovakia. He married Rosie Spann about 1910 and they farmed in Dickson School community. Survivors include three daughters Rose Gallagher Elsie Boyles Barbara Faurie two sons Edwin Welfel Daniel Welfel two sisters Rosie Zavesky Annie Culak, sixteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. He was preceded by his wife March 26 1947, three children, two brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services for Louis P. Butschek of 800 North Texana Street Hallettsville were held at Kabena Funeral Home and Sacred Heart Church with burial in Sacred Heart Cemetery. He died June 19 1967 at Renger Memorial Hospital at age 74 years six months ten days. He was born December 9 1892 in Fayette County. He is survived by daughter Marjorie Hlavaec Houston two brothers Fred Hackberry Henry Moulton a sister Mary Anders Moulton and four grandchildren.

Shiner Masonic Building Named Recorded Texas Landmark

The Shiner Masonic Lodge building is designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark by the Texas State Historical Survey Committee. A marker with a capsule history will be affixed, with dedication announced by James Simpson, and a certificate signed by Gov. Connally, Charles Woodburn, and Simpson.

Mobile X ray Unit to Visit Shiner July 19 1967

The Shiner Business Men's Club announces the Alamo Area TB Association Mobile X ray Unit will be at Legion Park Wednesday July 19 from 1 00 pm to 7 00 pm. A 50 cent adult and 25 cent teen charge is requested but no one will be refused if unable to pay. X rays will be for persons 14 and older with abnormal findings reported to the patient and family physician. Health officers will receive copies of abnormal reports.
