Joe R. Mikesh sanitary commissioner calls for a citywide cleanup of yards streets and alleys in the business district ahead of July 4 visitors. He urges weed cutting on streets and vacant lots and hopes for a strong citizen response to present a united holiday appearance.
Johnnie Hajek and Edmund Grief left Sunday to attend a week long John Deere School in Dallas. The event will showcase the latest farm equipment and new models set for display in July.
The Lutheran Fellowship evening on the church lawn drew an overflow crowd of the congregation and friends. Food was abundant and delicious, and a substantial free will offering was raised for church activities. The evening was ideal with good fellowship throughout.
Advertises enlistment in the U S Navy for three four or six year terms. Recruits aged 17 to 18 need parental consent. A Navy recruiter will be present all day on July 4 and again on July 9 and 10.

Mr and Mrs W E Merrem and Miss Mary Elizabeth Merrem of Houston were guests of Mrs E J Merrem and Miss Mabel Merrem last week. Miss Marie Benes, back from teaching in McAllen, visits her parents Mr and Mrs Albert Benes of Shiner and plans to attend the University of Texas in the second summer session to study foreign languages.

Lillian Patek and Joseph Janda Jr were united in marriage Tuesday at 7 30 am in Seguin with Nuptial High Mass by Rev R C Hoffmann. Attendants included Miss Edith Faldik and Miss Elizabeth Dolezal and the couple will reside in Seguin.

The Annunciation Church in Houston united Lillie Ripple Arnold and Ben J. Strauss in a June 23 double ring ceremony read by Rev. J. J. Davis. The couple will reside in Houston where Strauss works with the Texas Highway Department after a wedding trip to Carlsbad Caverns.
Fred A. Berckenhoff completed his optometry program at the Memphis College of Optometry in Tennessee. He has returned home and will take the State Board in Dallas before deciding his practice location. He is a 1932 graduate of Shiner High School.
The Shiner Fish and Game Protective League urges farmers to declare war on stray cats taking toll of wildlife. A single hungry cat can wipe out coveys of quail and young doves, prompting organized campaigns to kill stray cats during nesting season.
Miss Margaret Steinle was a guest in the home of her aunt Mrs. A. H. Kasper last week, sharing time and hospitality in the household.
Dorothy Sembera daughter of Mr and Mrs Adolf Sembera and Lonnie Ray Seale son of Mrs Ruby Seale of Giddings wed at First Baptist Church with Rev J E Early officiating. Attendants were Marian Seale and others as guests from Giddings. After a six o'clock dinner at the bride’s home the couple plan to reside in town. The bride, a Shiner High School and San Antonio College graduate, and the groom, a WWII veteran and former vocational agriculture instructor, expect prosperity and happiness.
Acting on a petition by twenty four qualified voters, an election is called at the School House on Saturday June 28 1947 from 8 a m to 7 p m to decide if the district shall levy an additional tax of 40 cents, bringing total annual tax to 50 cents per 100 dollars valuation. Only qualified resident property tax paying voters who own taxable property and have rendered it for taxation may vote.
The American Legion and W. F. W. Posts sponsor a large event at Blucher Park on Friday July 4 1947 with Army Colonel Miller Ainsworth of Gonzales to present a silver star posthu mous award to Mrs Angelina Polasek for bravery in combat. her son Richard Polasek was killed in action. Cards with duties and hours have been mailed to members. July 4 is a national holiday and attendees are urged to meet friends at Blucher Park.

Victor Matus, employed by Lane-Texas Co., suffered the loss of the index and middle fingers of his left hand and injuries to the arm while rigging pipe on a water well derrick at Alice. He returned home Monday to rest and recuperate.
The Shiner Texas City Council adopted water and sewer rates at its June 2 1947 session effective July 1 1947. Minimum charge 1 50 for 5 000 gallons or less with 20 cents per thousand gallons thereafter. Sewer service 50 cents per month per customer. If multiple customers share one meter the minimum applies to each customer.
