Military Honors For Rudolph Shimek In Last Rites

Funeral services were held for Rudolph L. Shimek at Buffington Funeral Home Shiner and Praha Catholic Cemetery with full military honors. Shimek 45 died after a brief illness, survived by his wife Stella Pavlicek and six brothers and a sister, with services led by Rev. Julius Petru.

Sunset Drive-In Opens With 2000 in Attendance

The Sunset Drive-In Theatre held a gala opening at the Yoakum Hallettsville "y" with a record crowd of about 2000 people. Over 400 cars filled the parking area and two showings were required due to demand before sundown.

Court of Honor for Troop 231 scheduled Thursday evening

The Court of Honor for Troop 231 will be held Thursday night June 29 at 7 00 p m at the park. Parents of the boys are invited as the Troop Committee prepares a cowboy stew. Scouts will present several demonstrations.

Funeral Services Held for Mrs Anna Orsak in Shiner

Mrs. Anna Orsak died Friday after a ten day illness. Born in Czechoslovakia Sept 11 1879 she arrived in America as a child and lived in Schulenburg Yoakum Cuero and Shiner. She was aged 70 years 9 months 5 days and survived by three daughters three sisters two brothers and six grandchildren. Funeral Mass held at Shiner Catholic Church with burial in St Josephs Cemetery Yoakum.

Louis Simicek Found Dead Near Moulton

Louis Simicek 46 was found dead at his home near Moulton on Saturday June 17. He was laid to rest Monday after a 9:30 a.m. service at the funeral home and cemetery officiated by Rev. Joseph Kopp. He was survived by his wife six children and several siblings. Pallbearers included Henry Brosch Jimmy Holub Rudy Steinacher Matt Simicek Joe and Adolph Vaculik.

John Walleck Rites Set for 8:45 A.M.

Funeral services are announced for John F. Walleck, 75, who died in San Antonio June 19 at Robert B. Green Hospital. The service will be today from Buffington Funeral Home in Shiner at 8:45 A.M., proceeding to the Catholic Church for Requiem Mass at 9:00 A.M. Interment will follow in Shiner Catholic Cemetery.

Shivers Praises REA Expansion to Texas Farms

Gov. Allan Shivers praised the Rural Electrification Administration for expanding electric power to rural Texas areas. He urged broad REA growth while opposing rural co op taxes and state rate regulation, and cautioned against neglecting needy rural sections as lines reach populated cities. The Gonzales meeting drew strong local support from Guadalupe Blanco REA members.

Shiner Prepares for July 4 Celebration with Parade and Dances

Twelve days remain until the 4th of July in Shiner. Plans include a kiddies parade, chicken barbecue, music, entertainment, and two big dances at Legion Park. The American Legion and VFW invite all to enjoy a safe and happy Independence Day.

Fire damages Kloda home with electric blaze

A Sunday morning fire in the Midway section destroyed the Frank Kloda residence after Mrs. Kloda suffered facial burns while fighting the flames with water. The house and contents were a total loss though some bedding was saved. The home was far from a telephone, making it impossible to summon firefighters in time. A new Frigidaire was among the destroyed furnishings.

All-Stars to Face Weimar Feeders in Night Game

An All-Star team from Tri-County League clubs will play the M-G Feeders of Weimar Thursday June 22 at 8 15 p m. The venue is Veterans Memorial Park Weimar. Admission is 50c and 25c. Team members include J Revera L Revera H Ullmann and J Dusek.

Census Shiner Gains. Lavaca County Drops in Latest Totals

A preliminary Galveston district census shows Lavaca County total to date at 22 122 with 1940 and 1930 figures 25 485 and 27 550 respectively. Hallettsville 2 001 Yoakum not listed two counties involved. Yoakum totals to come from Dallas office. Official census totals to be released by the Bureau of the Census.

Walter Cook Funeral Held in Rowena

News from Shiner reports the death of Walter Cook, longtime Rowena resident. After illness, funeral services were conducted in Rowena on Monday, with attendees including family members and neighbors from Shiner. Walter Cook passed away in San Angelo.

Kosmas Spoetzl 77 Leader in Shiner Dies After Illness

Kosmas Spoetzl 77 prominent Shiner citizen died Saturday after 15 months of ill health. Funeral Monday at 9:45 from his home then Sts Cyril and Methodius for Requiem High Mass. Interment in Shiner City Cemetery. Survivors include a daughter Mrs Cecilie Spoetzl Gasser and a son in law, along with relatives in Germany and the US. He built Spoetzl Brewery, hosted Theodore Roosevelt, and supported church and civic causes.

Tragic News Reaches Leech Family After Grandfather's Burial

Mr and Mrs H C Leech Jr receive a telegram at their home Monday noon announcing the death of H C Leach Sr in Greenville Texas. He suffered a heart attack at 10 am and did not recover. The couple left immediately for another sad mission.

New Shiner Catholic Church Gym Under Construction

Contractor E J Gerdes begins foundation work on the $108000 gymnasium and hall for the Shiner Catholic Church. The 70 by 100 foot main area includes a 70 by 25 foot stage, basement, lobby, kitchens, dressing rooms, two meeting rooms, restrooms, and acoustical brick walls with a maple floor. Completion planned in 150 working days with Baums and Whitworth as architects.
