New Homes and Repairs Spread Through Shine Area

Gazette survey over the weekend reports continued growth in Shine with multiple new homes under construction or nearing completion. Additions south of Legion Park include the James Pa tek Jr. residence and progress on the Tasler and Havel properties along Highway 200. Northside sees completed cottages for Benes, expanded garages for Schwabe, and new builds near Longoria, plus work on Guettner Jr. and Waldrop homes. The Methodist parsonage on Highway 200 nears occupancy while Kram enlarges rooms facing Legion Park. Groundbreaks continue for Maneth tile home and several Bruns Woehler Kurtz Macharek and Eicher cottages in the Zander addition.

Lavaca County Names New County Agent

Miss Callie Store Werth of College Station has been recommended as the new County Agent by A M College. Judge Paul Fertsch in a letter to Mrs. Edgar Kram stated the Commissioner's Court accepted the recommendation and Miss Werth was expected to assume her duties July 1.

Recent rains boosted crop conditions with corn reported as good and cotton fairly well chopped. Some insect damage noted but sporadic. pasturage and grain in fine shape. Reports vary by location with a few spots showing significant damage.

Yoakum announces the Sunset Drive-In Theatre opening tonight June 15 at the Yoakum Hallettsville Shiner Y. Hon H S Paulus will speak and Lightin Williams and his Four Flashes perform before the 7 45 p m showing of Mrs Mike. The drive in accommodates 436 cars with 35 and 9 cent admission. Parking ramps will be used and kiddie playground equipment will be installed soon.

Hospital Renovation Expands Local Medical Facilities

The years long enlargement at Dr. Wagner's hospital is finished adding a 14 room red brick annex raising beds to 30. New X ray room basement delivery nursery and nurses station along with expanded kitchens and dining areas modernize care. Local firms like First National Bank C B Welhausen Co Kasper Wire Works and Welhausen store are upgrading interiors and shop fronts as construction continues city wide.

Mrs. F Mikes Rites Held In Catholic Church

Mrs. Frank Mikes Sr. of Rt. 3 Shiner died June 8 at 1 05 PM at age 75 8 23. Funeral at Buffington Shiner then to Shiner Catholic Church for Requiem High Mass. Burial in Shiner Catholic Cemetery. Survived by husband five sons two daughters 29 grandchildren nine great grandchildren and other relatives. Funeral details note Rosary and services. born September 15 1874 in Czechoslovakia.

Neighborhood Grocery Planned in Former Cigar Factory Site

The Louis Ehlers homestead building once used as a cigar factory is being refinished as Martin Dernehl plans to open a small neighborhood grocery. Shiner’s paving continues with work near the Buske home and Farmers Co-op as Canon C J Gar bade and H G Hollman plan nearby improvements. Hartel Produce adds a 12 by 20 cooler and 10 by 20 egg room at its leased Gonzales site, front of the building being rebuilt. Legion Park’s dance pavilion and surrounding structures are freshly painted white, and Roeder Funeral Home adds a 14 by 22 room to the chapel.

Shiner Leads County In T. B. X Ray Registrations

At the close of the T B X Ray registration Wednesday night Shiner reported 1125 registrations. Two years earlier the total was 1081 while Moulton recorded 1067 and Hallettsville 791. The report positions Shiner as the county leader in health screenings.

Rites Held Sunday for Joe F Hughs Native Son

Joe F. Hughs born September 25 1871 in Shiner died Friday night after a four month illness. Funeral at Buffington Funeral Home 3 pm Sunday with burial in City Cemetery. He was a retired stockman and long time rural carrier. Survived by his wife and son Thomas B Hughs of Shiner, two granddaughters Patricia Mae and Stella Joel Hughs of Houston, three sisters and one deceased granddaughter Florence Dee Hughs.

Fourth of July Festivities Planned in Shiner by Legion and VFW

Shiner gears up for a full holiday with a Kiddies Parade at 10:00 a.m. entries limited to children twelve and under. Prizes target educational, beautiful, comical, and best all around. A 1,000-serving chicken barbecue at 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. supper. Music by Nordheim Fiermen’s Band, Shiner High School Band, and the Shiner HO-BO Band. Public speeches at 2:00 p.m. Two dances follow at Legion Park and Sunken Garden with Pateks and Cornelion orchestras.
