The Shiner High School Board met on Wednesday June 12 1974 to hear four applicants for the high school principal position. No decision was made. a special meeting was set for Monday June 17 to continue consideration.
Brannan Contractors of Victoria plans a seal coat on US 90 A in Shiner as part of a 162 mile Texas Highway Department resurfacing contract in District 13. work begins June 18 or 19 with traffic kept moving in strips, warning signs and flagmen on site. George F. Gold of Fayette County oversees the project for the highway department.
The Senior Texans Employment Program in Hallettsville completes its fourth month with enrollees Edith Chapman Otto Hanak Albert Kahanek Elmo Grant Bennie Siegel and Lonnie Fojtik cleaning painting and repairing local sites. STEP aids low income seniors 55 plus by providing manpower for community projects at minimal sponsor cost. County Judge Claude Mullins backs the Lavaca County program and inquiries go to Mullins or David M Hartwig in Waco.
El Paso VFW and Ladies Auxiliary plan the 54th annual Texas VFW convention from June 19 to 23 1974. Events include a Horizon City Country Club golf tourney a Juarez dog track party and multiple meetings and services at the El Paso convention center. Gene Horecka and Mrs Horecka will represent the local post and auxiliary.
Dr H B Gee of Yoakum returned from the 59th annual Texas Chiropractic Association convention in Houston held June 5 to 7. Featured speakers included Dr David Brum Dr Russell Erhardt Dr E V Walton and others who spoke on chiropractic research education and care for senior citizens under Medicare.
Highway Patrolmen Jim Flewelling and Joe Abernathy who were stationed in Hallettsville have been transferred to other stations in Texas. Flewelling moves to Bishop and Abernathy to Tyler.
Funeral services for Ed E Koliba were held June 13 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church Yoakum with Rev Michael O'Shaughnessy officiating. Burial followed in Shiner Catholic Cemetery under Buffington Funeral Home. He died June 11 1974 at Huth Memorial Hospital at age 76.
The Frank and Johanna Kutach reunion will be held June 23 at Wied Hall with barbecue chicken and trimmings. Attendees should bring sweets and an item up to $1 for games. Knights of Columbus meet June 20 at 7 30 p.m. at VFW Hall. Firemen's Auxiliary family night on June 25 at Green Dickson Park. bring thawed chicken by 5 p.m. and a side dish by 7 p.m. Steeltie Family reunion June 23 at Legion Park Dining Hall with basket lunch. St Isidor Society No 4 meets June 23 at 1 30 p.m. at the Parish Gym.
A meeting of Post 201 and Auxiliary is set for Tuesday June 25 at 8 p.m. in the Legion Hall. Members are urged to attend to select officers for the coming year. Eats and refreshments will follow. please bring your bowl and spoon.
Mrs. Jim Trobl nee Lula Douglass dies at 64 years 11 months 11 days in Houston Diagnostic Hospital on June 17 1974. Body lies Buffington Funeral Home Shiner until 1 pm June 19 then to Shiner Catholic Church for 2 pm Holy Mass. Rosary held June 18. Burial in Shiner Catholic Cemetery.
Rudolph F. Huff 72 of Corpus Christi died Tuesday June 4 1974 in a local hospital. Funeral services were held June 6 at Christ Lutheran Church with interment at Seaside Memorial Park. He was born October 18 1901 in Shiner Texas and lived in Moulton before moving to Corpus Christi in 1943. He retired from the laundry and cleaning business after 25 years. He is survived by his wife Emma one daughter and four grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents and a sister.
Funeral services were held in Houston for Dr. Ernest Lawrence Valenta a 72 year old dentist who died June 12 1974. He was the eldest son of Ignatius E and Veronica Valenta and survived by six siblings with ties to Halletts ville El Campo Houston Alice and Los Angeles. The services were at St Michael s Catholic Church and interment at Calvary Cemetery in Houston with his Rev Father Marcus A Valenta of Praha participating.
A CYO Rally is planned Sunday June 23 at the Catholic Parish Gym in Shiner with 2:00 PM registration, 2.50 per person, and a dance at Wied Hall featuring The Velvets. Contact Carla Beth Kubicek at 594-3689 for details.
Mrs. Fritz v. Michaelis nee Bertha Jahnsen of Shiner died June 11 1974 after a long illness at Shiner Hospital aged 86. Burial followed at Shiner City Cemetery after services at United Dr Martin Luther Church with Rev Clifford Grosenbacher officiating. Pallbearers were grandsons and a nephew. She was survived by two daughters a son five grandchildren and three great grandchildren along with siblings and half siblings. Her husband died in 1953.

Funeral services held for Mrs Henry A Spies nee Minnie Schaefer at St Ann church Houston following a June 6 1974 death in St Josephs Hospital. Burial in Garden of Gethsemane. Survived by husband Henry A Spies son Paul Henry Spies daughters Sister Alice Spies and Gladys Harrison. Burial details and family obituary notes included.
The Shiner Youth Club hosts a swimming party on Friday June 21 in Yoakum. Activities include trucks and cars display, departure at 3 30 p m, swimming until 8 p m, followed by ice cream service.
GVEC schedules 35th Annual Meeting for Friday June 28 1974 at the Apache Football Field Gonzales with 6 30 p m registration and 8 p m start. Directors from Districts One Four and Seven to be elected for three year terms. Guest speaker Reagan Brown to discuss community improvement. Lavaca County gains funding under the 1974 Texas Farm to Market Road Program approved by the Texas Highway Commission. District Engineer C V Ramert said $111 500 in additional funds supplement $253 000 already approved for FM 3283 from US 90A at Sublime to 3.9 miles south, at an estimated total cost of $364 500. The statewide program covers 565.9 miles costing about $21.4 million, a county–type partnership with right of way by counties and construction by the Highway Department. Texas now has about 40 thousand miles of paved Farm and Ranch to Market Roads, a highly developed secondary system.
Lightning struck near a tree and fence on the Mott farm south of Yoakum during a cool front passage on June 3. Ten cattle, including two cows two calves and six yearlings, were killed among about 75 head in the pasture. The animals were found about 7 am 150 yards from the house after a loud crash around 4 am.
