School Board Hears Principal Applicants

The Shiner High School Board met on Wednesday June 12 1974 to hear four applicants for the high school principal position. No decision was made. a special meeting was set for Monday June 17 to continue consideration.

Brannan Contractors of Victoria plans a seal coat on US 90 A in Shiner as part of a 162 mile Texas Highway Department resurfacing contract in District 13. work begins June 18 or 19 with traffic kept moving in strips, warning signs and flagmen on site. George F. Gold of Fayette County oversees the project for the highway department.

STEP Enrollees Improve Lavaca County Projects

The Senior Texans Employment Program in Hallettsville completes its fourth month with enrollees Edith Chapman Otto Hanak Albert Kahanek Elmo Grant Bennie Siegel and Lonnie Fojtik cleaning painting and repairing local sites. El Paso Hosts VFW State Meet With Wide Agenda

El Paso VFW and Ladies Auxiliary plan the 54th annual Texas VFW convention from June 19 to 23 1974. Funeral services for Ed E Koliba were held June 13 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church Yoakum with Rev Michael O'Shaughnessy officiating. Burial followed in Shiner Catholic Cemetery under Buffington Funeral Home. He died June 11 1974 at Huth Memorial Hospital at age 76.

Funeral Services for Rudolph Huff in Corpus Christi

Rudolph F. Huff 72 of Corpus Christi died Tuesday June 4 1974 in a local hospital. Funeral services were held June 6 at Christ Lutheran Church with interment at Seaside Memorial Park. He was born October 18 1901 in Shiner Texas and lived in Moulton before moving to Corpus Christi in 1943. He retired from the laundry and cleaning business after 25 years. He is survived by his wife Emma one daughter and four grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents and a sister.

Funeral services were held in Houston for Dr. Ernest Lawrence Valenta a 72 year old dentist who died June 12 1974. He was the eldest son of Ignatius E and Veronica Valenta and survived by six siblings with ties to Halletts ville El Campo Houston Alice and Los Angeles. The services were at St Michael s Catholic Church and interment at Calvary Cemetery in Houston with his Rev Father Marcus A Valenta of Praha participating.

Mrs. Fritz v. Michaelis nee Bertha Jahnsen of Shiner died June 11 1974 after a long illness at Shiner Hospital aged 86. Burial followed at Shiner City Cemetery after services at United Dr Martin Luther Church with Rev Clifford Grosenbacher officiating. Pallbearers were grandsons and a nephew. She was survived by two daughters a son five grandchildren and three great grandchildren along with siblings and half siblings. Her husband died in 1953.

Lavaca FM Roads Due Improvements

Lavaca County gains funding under the 1974 Texas Farm to Market Road Program approved by the Texas Highway Commission. District Engineer C V Ramert said $111 500 in additional funds supplement $253 000 already approved for FM 3283 from US 90A at Sublime to 3.9 miles south, at an estimated total cost of $364 500. The statewide program covers 565.9 miles costing about $21.4 million, a county–type partnership with right of way by counties and construction by the Highway Department. Texas now has about 40 thousand miles of paved Farm and Ranch to Market Roads, a highly developed secondary system.

Lightning Kills Ten Head Of Cattle At Mott Farm Yoakum

Lightning struck near a tree and fence on the Mott farm south of Yoakum during a cool front passage on June 3. Ten cattle, including two cows two calves and six yearlings, were killed among about 75 head in the pasture. The animals were found about 7 am 150 yards from the house after a loud crash around 4 am.
